Carafino 2-4-1 The Truth Exposed

Postby adambator » Fri Jun 27, 2014 4:37 pm

Hello kiters, Is the 2-4-1 offered by carafino a scam. Decide for yourself. Four of us out here in FL have been waiting for almost 6 months now. Carafino keeps making silly excuses, and continues to lead everyone on. He sent us two poorly deisgned boards about 4-6 weeks ago but of course, no foils and no straps. These boards have brass threaded inserts that the foil mounting bolts attach to. Also the boards were delieverd unfinished with blemishes. See attached photos.

Also, we have had no choice but to dispute the dredit card charges due to his inability to deliver on his promises. Basically he has collected funds from the 2-4-1 customers to fund his endeavour and is now defaulting on his promises and trying to sell the products that we paid for to retail customers and kite shops. He is trying to sell to the local kite shops but we all know each other and none of them are willing to dea with him.

Attached are photos of the boards. Copies of email communications between me and carafino are next. Sorry i dont have the time to post them right now..

All of these photos were taked on the day of delivery.

Notice the missing straps and the dull unfinished surface.

I don't disagree with your assessment of the whole situation. I was told back in October if I buy now, I would have a complete foil in 5-6 weeks...

Is there something wrong with using brass though? Raceboard fins in tuttle boxes are held on with brass barrel nuts and don't seem to have any problems.

I'm also wondering why the concern about brass. Brass cost less to machine, so it's savings. I'd be more worried about the box coming out of the board before the brass failed.

I wish surfboard inserts were using machine screws instead of sheet metal screws.

It's very, very soft and easy to strip. With a fin you can just replace the barrel nut. With a box like that? Don't know can't see it properly but it doesn't look easy. It's a similar issue for most bolt into board mounts. There's a few builders using two mast tracks to mount plate style foils. It's easy to move the position and fix the nut if anything bad happens.

The brass issue is one that Mr C brought up in his own promo vids when he was wangling on about his superior foils
He stated then and subsequently on this forum ( the front wing repair thread I think) that brass should never be used and it wasn't used in his gear

Looks like he forgot about these ones ...

Good point. I did have to replace the brass barrel nuts on my formula raceboard fins...

Bronze is actually best for applying lots of torque so you don't get galling between stainless and stainless. This probably would only happen in assembly if the fastener was misaligned. There can be a case made for bronze though.

A bit off topic here, but what if the insert were threaded, and made
from Delrin plastic ; the insert could be tapped to accept a SS bolt, which
would turn the entire mounting system into a fusible-link ? When destroyed, the
Delrin would be easily removed with hand-tools ; and all would be good, as long
as the foil and strut could float.

Saw my very first triumphant arch in the flesh yesterday at the beach. It only had 3 of the mast plate bolts screwed in with the front one missing. I asked about it. The owner said he tightened that one and it gave a little pop and out came the insert.
