Alpinefoil 4.5 Maiden voyage

Postby Hawaiis » Thu Apr 03, 2014 8:11 am

I was at the beach today riding on my surfboard, John came with his newly purchased Alpinefoil 4.5, and asks if i want to give it a go. My kite was a 11M Cabinha Drifter, I knew it was going to be over powered, but I did not have a smaller kite with me. The hook strap was too far back, but decided to give it a try anyway. John made the board himself, it was kind of floaty. I was totally overpowered when the wind was about 15knots. This foil is awesome, I will bring my 4M kite tomorrow. Mahalo John for letting me try it.

Your friend made a great choice IMHO! :thumb:
So cool you get to fly such a nice foil, I am jealous!
Please test with foot further forward and let us know what you feel.
And light wind tests maybe with gps if you have. :?:
I like looking at wind speed as compared to foil speed, I know someone almost got 4 times but 3 is already great!
Any chance you could provide such stats?
H, what do you mean by the board is to "floaty"
Thanx for vid

I have a Suunto GPS watch,
Floaty means the board is too thick and float too much, like a course race board, takes a little getting use to.

The wind was light, the most I can get was 13MPH, first day I clocked it at 17MPH.

This is an unedited long video, a short version will be available shortly.

This is the edited short version
It is easier to ride than the Moses Racefoil, as soon as the foot strap moved forward, it rides almost as easily as the Carafino, only more smooth and faster.

Hawaiis,

Is that the Alpine Board also or another board with the Alpine Foil mounted onto it?

It's a custom board made by the owner John himself.

Hey bud,

You're choking the hell out of that kite. You need to let it breathe much more.

When you have the kite at 12, pull in a little to get enough tension in the back lines to get the kite to turn. As the kite dives, push the bar out, the kite will fly a LOT faster and as you turn it back up you can start to pull in a bit, but nearly never the whole way. You need to get that kite flying fast so that when you DO pull the bar in your have all that power built up from the dive of the kite.

Also, the fact you're having to almost lock the bar to keep the kite tracking doesn't make any sense either. That kite does not look like it is trimmed well at all.

With the kite above you in 8 knots, you should be able to pull the bar the whole way in with little to no back stall.

Let the kite breathe and it will work a lot better for you
