7 kn of wind, who will win AC45F (America's cup boat) or kite foil?

Postby happywizz » Tue Jun 13, 2017 7:28 am

A few days i had a discussion about how competitive the top kite hydrofoilers are compared to the fastest sailing boats (AC45F) on a race course. I had this discussion with a sailor and he said kiters don't have a chance at all. I think that in the low wind spectrum the kiters have a (good) chance. What do you think? And what about the future, will we be the fastest ever?
I am interested to know your thoughts.

Not a chance.
Those boats can do 35+ kts as soon as they can get up on their foils.

Let's not forget the money and research that went into those foils. Even the best kitefoil R&D team looks like a bunch of amateurs compared to the teams they have for R&D in the America's Cup.

Yeah. I also think there us no chance in light winds.
But!
What about high winds. They cancel races when the wind hits above 24 knots.
I'm just starting to grin at 24 knots.
I'd like to see a race in choppy swell 35+ knots.

at 24 knots these boats are going over 45 knots downwind. No kiter on those conditions in deep water would have a hope!

Yeah but would they implode at 30 knots of wind?
Could they handle any sort if half decent swell?

I don't think so. It I think they are a light winds flat water craft.

Currently kitefoiling is limited to the power to weight ratio of a kiter pushing on a foil.

If the kite is pulling on the foil, then the power can go up a lot. Maybe in the future we will see a high performance version of that.

In winds over 30kts the AC catamarans become dangerous to handle simply because their rig is too powerful.
If they were allowed to have a smaller rigid wing-mast for the very strong winds they would still win.

Or if you want to make the competition fair you need to be using the same kite in 30kts as you did in 7 kts.
