bar length important?

Postby neilhapgood » Sat Jul 08, 2017 5:28 pm

Hi Folks,

so I had that heart sinking moment this week when I went to get my bar and it wan't there, realised I must have left it at the beach a couple of weeks ago.

It was a 4 line north bar, I think about 54cm long.

I have another older north bar thats closer to 50cm long that I now want to use instead.

I use the bar with an 8m blade trigger and 12m blade skinny boy, normally on 27cm lines.

Thoughts on if a shorter bar may present any problems?!

It makes a difference, but its all personal preference. I hate long bars. All of mine are under 50cm. Biggest kite is 12m so not using em on BIG kites. You can absolutely use the older bar.

4 cm bar with on a 50 cm bar won't make that much of a different. You probably won't even notice the difference in steering.

You may want to use longer lines though, with 27cm lines it is closer to windsurfing than kiteboarding

Don't worry about it. I run 50cm bar on all my kites from 13m to 4m.

If you are doing down loops during your jibes or tacks you may want to reach up and pull on the leader line to make sure your kite gets through the loop without hitting the water. A shorter bar can make a significant difference during kiteloops.

I think longer bars definitely helps with hydrofoil. I steer mostly with one hand and having leverage helps. I use 60cm bars in all my kites (sonic 9,11,15,18m). Looping is much easier. Then again I use foil kites which are a lot slower to turn than tube kites. Maybe for tube kites it does not matter. I could use maybe 50cm bars with my smaller kites (9,11) but carbon bars are so dam light i don't really understand what is the benefit of the narrow bars. My bars weight 160 grams (bar only) and 50cm would weight 150grams (most of the weight comes from extra carbon around line holes). I like that all my bars are identical.
