Instant fly from water start

Postby abel » Thu Jul 13, 2017 4:09 pm

Yesterday I had my first unintentional instant fly from water start. :nooo:
The feeling was great as I thought I'll never be able to do it, while it came out naturally :) (single shot though)
Anyhow, it got more confidence and began water-starting a lot closer to the shore instead of body dragging out to the middle of the sea for avoiding the sand banks.
The main benefit was the time and effort saver.
Now I hope I'll be able to do it intentionally 8)
Any tips for doing so under a controllable manner?

Just keep trying it, paying attention to how much power you need to do it, and how much back foot pressure you need. I feel like 1/2 of my instant foiling starts are a bit uncontrolled but definitely want to get better at them for when it's lower tide and I don't want to drag a few hundred feet out.

Loop or long lateral 3-9 o'clock swipe of the kite for start up. Plan to get up to speed right off the hole shot Don't bear upwind too early.

A great technique to learn is the down loop to toe side water start. It allows you to directly pop up onto foil heel side as you then follow kite in its downloop by then going directly to toe side. Thus you're up with speed and power and if need more to stay on foil or wave coming at you, you can rapidly carve to heel side.

I was watching a great foiler do this. So I learned it as it has moments when it applies to the situation

So far I have only gotten one of these, but I need lots, or a short mast for my shallow sandbar spots. It is a cool feeling. :thumb:

Can someone explain this in more detail or maybe point me to a video?

Thanks so much
