Strapless carving 360

Postby Flag53 » Fri Jul 21, 2017 12:00 pm

Hi all , I've gone back through previous posts but can't really find much info on this move .
I know it'd be easier with straps but is anyone doing them strapless and if so what are your main tips .
I have tried a few but all that happens is the board flys away from me about half way through the manoeuvre.

Cheers 👍

Hi Flag,

Yes. Here is a video. Click on it to start it. Second half is the close up shot.

If your board is flying away from you, you are leaning back to far. You need to bring your bodyweight forward, just like in a tack. Can you do 180s yet (tack to toeside)? A 360 is basically a continuation of that move. Bascially do the 180, then keep pulling on your "back hand" to loop the kite and follow the kite around with the board. Again it is important that you keep your weight centred on the board, and not lean back.

If you can't do a 180, have a look here:

Found keeping these points in mind help with strapless tacks to toeside, or the continuation into a 360.

Pick up speed before going into the move

As your speed picks up, drift the kite to the zenith

Once your kite is high but before you begin to bleed off speed, turn your head upwind over your shoulder and look to where you want to go (keep looking over shoulder to do 360).

Sheet in as you pass through the eye of the wind and dive or loop it on the new tack to finish with speed.

Like a lot of tricks in kiteboarding, I started learning this one without fully visualizing/planning it through to the finish. You start with only the first part in your head, and wonder why you only make it half way! Resist the urge to look down at your feet or board. If you look down, that is where you will end up, if you look up at the kite, you will likely stall and fall off the tail. Look to the finish keeping your eyes up and posture tall and vertical throughout the move. M/L size kites are easier for learning this move.

Thanks guys , two great replies 👍

One other thing do you do them tight to the wind or doesn't it matter .

cheers

I only really do em from an upwind reach, If I'm headed off the wind its just more intuitive to carve down into into a jibe.

Ok guys so I was trying these today.

Went in with good speed , took the kite ( LEI ) to midnight.
Carved upwind pushed the bar out and looked over my shoulder , but really struggled to get my weight forward on the board and all but one I got lifted off the board .
Should it be a tight turn or a longer one and any other tips please 👍

You can get away with a very tight turn (and risk loosing speed) if you are using straps but for a strapless 360 you have to be more fluid, not too tight and most of all maintain speed.

To get your weight forward you need to bend your front knee. Also let your body get close to the bar. The Depowerline should almost be hitting you in the face.

Are you committing to looping the kite? If not, that is another reason why you are being lifted off the board as the kite is staying at 12 too long.
