Wear and tear on Zeeko Foil/Board/NSI foothooks

Postby Macisback » Sat Aug 19, 2017 10:53 am

Just a little report to share my experience after 18 months with about 60 days on the water

Alloy foil: Very hard to kill it, even with my heavy abuse (ramming into ground, failed jumps fully loaded).

Wings can easily be spray painted after every season.
I used lots of Tikal Tefgel, no corrosion at all.
But its a dirty job with all that grease, maybe corrosion patches like Alpine would be better.

I managed to bend the 3 screws fitting the mast into the plate during jumping with 60cm mast though, cheap to replace - always carry lots of spare screws when jumping!)

Board: The top layer of the 2015 Slash gets small chips a bit easier than other boards, but its ok.
The holes for screwing in straps - I had to fill them with glue several times by now when screws were torn out - i guess inserts would work better.

NSI Foothooks: They have to break before your ankle does, but the weak spot is a bit too weak.
Guess they should do what I did - reinforce the first part with Inox steel 3mm. This way only the top can break off and you are rid of the weak spot which will prolong their lifespan massively - had 2 breaking out of three within 5 weeks (lots of crashes by several beginners though).

Overall - very happy with the setup (if you maintain it well). Will now change to the Spitfire and new 5,2 board with Slingshot foothooks.

Thanks for the informative report.

My NSI foot hook broke (at the angle) during my third session with them.

You can make a diy foot hook in about 10 minutes, cuttting a strip of plastic cutting board and then bending it with a heat gun. It is much stronger. But maybe so strong that your ankle would break before it? Or if a line caught on it and started kite death looping, it might not break off. Dunno.....where is the line between breakaway gear for safety vs breakaway gear to sell more hooks?

Talking about DIY, I have seen Sir Franz Olry craft a couple of foot hooks out of the edge of a rubbish bin, the bits by the handles, and they looked absolutely mint! Strong, stiff and light. I wish I took a picture.

What kind of rubbish bin are we talking about?

Not completely sure. Saw the end product, not the source, but probably something like that... French old school rubbish bin. On the one pictured, in the lid you'd be able to cut quite a few of them. Keep them wide enough and you'll have stiffness. Some lids have ridges that would make them stiffer. Some of them are heavy duty rubber... Otherwise the handles... Keep your eyes peeled, and you might see potential foot hooks everywhere. You might spot beauty among the rubbish!

If it is the big ones like these or similar, they cost almost 100 euro :o but if you can make "a lot" out of one bin, it is fine :D
I could see the potential where it is "Z" shaped at the two handles, and along the front edge:
