I'm using the Mystic impact vest with D3O material that absorbes shock and get hard on impact.
Check it out. Seems to work. I've done a lot of hard falls and even had a slight concussion the other day, wearing old Gath helmet. I fell down doing 30km/hr plus in 70 cm wind swell and cross chop on top. Don't feel a thing on my torso.

I always use an Ion vest. Payed itself many times over when learning tacks and gybes as it's not hard to fall on the board (or foil itself). Just the other day I fell with my back against the edge of the board... agree also worth it for the extra flotation as I tend to go further from shore on the foil.

Yep. Mainly for the floatation. Because my location is cross on I can be a good km+ out to sea. Floatation is good if yhr shit hits the fan

I don't think impact vests make a lot of difference in terms of hitting the water. If anything they make it worse because there's a bit more drag when you hit.

I beg to differ. Boosting large and crashing with and without there is a big difference. I have not had the wind knocked out of me with on one. Numerous times without.

I wear one for 2 reasons:
1) floatation, I'm often 1-2 km from shore in winds that are lower than my water relaunch threshold
2) carrying my heavy ass alu foil, I sometimes have a 10 min walk with my foil to deep water and like the padding to keep the mast off my collar bone

NP Rise here. Quite slim unlike some that have big foam blocks.

I ride with an impact vest and helmet. I had a few pretty hard falls several months ago, so I don't want to take any chances of (re-) breaking my ribs. Also, the added float is a nice safety net on those light wind days when a water relaunch is impossible.
