Not even once... but plastic bags, ropes and jellyfish (during two month at start of summer).
Once I had a close encounter with a big sea turtle that raised afloat just in front of my path . I pivoted left and the turtle down :out:.
So no casualties to the creatures (me one of them) or the equipment.

Pretty sure I haven't hit a fish yet in a couple years of foiling. Weeds are the only hang up around here, and they get progressively worse at the end of the summer when the water levels drop a bit and they begin to break off in and form big floating bunches. We are pretty lucky that its mostly deep fresh water and there is not much marine life at the surface.

I'd feel pretty awful hitting rays or turtles. Probably would feel less guilty about a fish. The only fish I'm likely to see at the surface are bloated dead carp! See a few of those in the course of a season.

Hitting sea life is by far my least favorite thing about foiling. We have murky water where I live, so it's difficult to tell if it sea life or something else -- bag, clump of sea grass, etc -- but on a few occasions where the light was right I have looked down right before I've hit small (4-5 foot) sharks and seen them try to get out of the way. Of course after I get knocked off the board I always imagine that they are pissed off and coming for me.

Out in the open ocean I have a brush with something pretty much every session and a full-on, dead stop, complete eject hit with something every few sessions.

Yeah those rays are the problem. They hang out right under the surface. I hit bait fish sometimes too, but the rays get up to 40 lbs and definitely send you flying. This is me foiling with 1000s of rays a few years ago:

Excuse the expletives I was yelling

Our local spot is at the mouth of the Squamish river which is an active salmon spawning river. This time of year the salmon seem to be at the end of their life cycle and many are very sluggish and slow. I have hit several in a single session. They are big enough, 30 cm, that it usually sends me flying off my board. Earlier in the summer the fish are healthy and fast enough that we rarely have collisons. There are plenty of seals around enjoying their sushi meals, but we rarely have any impacts with them. I believe that the seals can hear hydrofoils and they are very quick.

Last spring in Maui i nailed a turtle. It was just underwater so I never saw it in time to avoid it. Maui leatherback turtles are big enough (80 cm typically) that I doubt it was injured. It sure sent me flying.

I'm not concerned too much about fish as they just bounce off the foil

I've run into sharks 3 times now though, and they're big enough that it stops you dead and throws you off.... which is not exactly the place you want to be body dragging back to your board...

The recipe for fish collisions on Holbox.

One racefoil
One setting sun
add wind and mix thoroughly.

You are almost guaranteed to hit at least one needlefish.

Someone told me that the rays were migrating last week and I had this recurring nightmare.

So far not seen more than 4 at once.
