Re: Stance width?

This is a great topic and one I have experimented with over time. I've discovered it's all about distance from front strap to mast plate, and the back foot really doesn't matter if the front foot is correct. For me, it's usually a 60cm stance although that changes depending on if I'm toeside and /riding upwind. Wider seems really tiring.

Zeeko recommend 37cm from bolt to bolt (rear bolt front strap to front of mast plate) and whenever I deviate from this, performance and balance seems to suffer.

Before foiling I only rode strapless SB - never TT so I'm pretty comfortable that my SB technique is solid. I know I move my back foot around a lot depending on what I'm doing. Upwind toeside = narrow stance - say 12" or 30cm, back foot right over in the upwind rail, and a much wider stance when I'm on the wave. I hate riding with straps on SB now because it locks me into the "wrong" stance for the entire session. Do you set up for upwind ease or on the wave ? One angle will be perfect, the other direction will suffer

I do exactly the same on the foil - As long as my front foot is anchored in the right spot, I can move my back foot wherever I like. Being mobile makes a massive difference to my comfort and toeside upwind angles

On other foils it's a bit harder as I don't have the 37cm rule. I believe (correct me please) that moving the mast forward (closer to the front foot) increases the weight on that foot, moving it away decreases it.

I'm using a SS space pickle. Not crazy about it, but it's the girl I'm dancing with. I'm riding a Delta race hydrofoil with the tuttlebox connection.

Here are my dimensions if that helps. I will say this...I rode a buddies medium aspect wing and board the other day and his stance was MUCH narrower than mine...maybe exactly the width of a TT. I'm happy with my stance width, but would like to see what others are using.

With my setup if you measure middle of foot to middle of foot my distance is 26.5 inches or 674 mm.

Your back footstrap is further back than where I place my foot (no strap).I'm thinking it might be the hoverglide. In one of the threads pf referenced it mentioned rear foot position was in front of foil mast.On your board I would be 6"+ forward of where your rear footstrap is.Just have to put some time in and let things sort themselves out.

It looks like your mast is closer to the trailing edge of the board than mine. You can measure that and compare it to mine. Keep in mind what type of riding you want to do. I'm still new to all this, but if you look at Greg in Hawaii, he has a very narrow stance.....

I didn't know what type of riding I wanted, but I think the wider stance and race foil kinda worked with what I like. I'm enjoying being able to go 20+mph upwind and getting to crazy upwind areas I've never been before not to mention some insane boosts! I may try the 360 carves, toeside, and awesome freestyle stuff later.

Watch some videos and see where the strapless guys are placing there foot work! Very important skill set!

Time to revive this thread. I'm running +
59cm stance. Thinking of going wider to 65cm. Any disadvantage in going wider?

when you say 59cm . . . . where are you measuring?

Rear insert of front strap to rear insert of back strap?

Im all over the board.
It depends on my mood, the conditions, speed etc.
Sometimes both feet facing forward and locked by the ankle's, I guess this is why I'm enjoying strapless...
Most of the time in regular riding, I measure 60 cm.
(from middle of my foot)
My back foot position is just behind the mast.

Cheers

yeah, or front bolt to front bolt. Essentially the center to center of foot straps.

I've added 5cm, Lets see how that goes.

Possibly the shortest response on KF ever?

Surely there is some negative?

I honestly can not think of any downsides, only a lot of advantages:

1. You got more control for high speed.
2. You got more control for jumping and landings.
3. You got more control and power for carving and riding waves.
4. You can ride toeside with more pressure and control.
5. You can jibe better, more room if you use straps, both behind the front ones or in front of the rear one.
6. You can always switch to narrow stance whenever you want - NOT possible to go wider if you dont have a wide strap setup.

Of course it is up to personal preference how wide is too wide, as at some point you probably dont like to stand that wide and like to stand narrow and relaxed, eventhough it might work better overall with wide stance - but you can still do that with wide straps

The only thing there is, could be that some find it looks cool to stand narrow in "Greg" style - but you can do that anyways, especially if straps are wider it is easier :naughty:
