Hi thanks for your insights.

Dna goes down to 6M. Lithium goes smaller.

I can get a 2015 RPM 4,5m, new stock, for 425€. Lowest price so far.
Anyone use one?

I don't like short throw depower, don't like on-off feeling, prefer to have more throw to adjust power.

Funny enough I've got one of them as well (rpm 4.5) all be it about 2013 version a bit of a pet bee on a string and lacking the grunt to pull you up on to the foil unless its squealing

Well , I have the RPM 4,5 on loan. Tomorrow looking 22-28 knots. I'll see if I dare go out in the side off wind..small peninsula as a catch before the north sea.

Today I was out in very gusty and variable winds. 19-30 knots according to windfinder, and it felt that way. I was totally over rigged on my Mono 7. about 80% of the time. After an hour I rigged the 4.5 RPM. Kite flies nice and predictable on 24m lines, 45cm bar.
Granted, it was only short session, but I have big difficulty getting up. Only in gusts could I get up. I tried loops. Didn't work.
My conclusion is that there's too much gap to my 7m kite.
I think I need a Mono 5 ( relatively powerful, just like the other Monos) or a relatively weaker 6m kite like a Reo.

I found that when using a 5M kite it helped to have longer lines ( I put 5m extensions on )
That gave me the extra ummph to get out of the water and water start and it also slowed the kite down a lot .

Sounds right to me yes, the gap is too big Tom...

For waveboards, the 5 to 7 m2 is a gap many uses, but even this is a tad big so many get the 6 m2 too.

So from 4.5 to a powerful 7 m2 is a no go....

You are right, you need a powerful 5 like the Mono or a depower 6.

Or a Cab drifter 5.5 :naughty:

In the small sizes, sizing means A LOT !
Difficult to explain why, but when you have ridden these you just know...

For the big kites it does not matter that much, really, huge steps between is just fine

Today we were out on waveboards with 5 m2 kites, insane (good and big) waves, all good.
Then the wind dropped, and we rigged 6 m2 - when I turned on the first waves I thought "Bloody hell this kite is slow" ha haa - it is really fast, but compared to the 5 one gets used to quickly, it was a big dull bag :o

Perhaps the wind dropped off after you rigged the 4.5. You should be able to loop up and go on a 4m in 20 knots.

I have 4m uno, 6m reo, 8m catalyst for my small kites.

8m 10-20 knots fun zone 13-18 can hold to 25.
6m 15-30 knots. Fun zone 18-25 knots.
4m 18 -40+ knots. Fun zone 25-40. I start trimming at 40 ish.

Thanks for your insights. A few of us foilers are struggling with this small kite question up here.
One of our problems is that when wind is 20 knots plus, it's very variable and gusty. It's 20-30 knots. A few minutes 20, a few minutes 30. During the 20 knots your getting momentary 30 knot kicks.

Hello Tom,

We have similar or worst condition at our home spot most times when its windy.
Im happy with my 6m Bandit from 20 to 30 knots...
Sure, at times I would be sufficiently powered on a 4m, but when it drops, its just not fun. So I prefer to be a little over powered.

Cheers

I agree. However there is definitely a small kite technique to use to get enjoyment out lull winds. That is flying super aggressively and looping through the powerzone even when you are riding fully fast.
Water start is done with what I call an infinity loop. Essentially a back loop/front loop combo. Hold the loops wide and through the powerzone.

PS We get variable winds here too. A 10 knot swing 20-30 knots is pretty easy. 20 knot swing not so easy. In the upper range also achievable. I've done 20-40 on the 4m and it was a blast. 15-30 on the 6 also possible.
You just have to watch out for the high speed death runs broad reach if you are too powered in the gusts!
