Who calls LEIs vertical structural elements "masts"?

Postby revhed » Thu Oct 05, 2017 9:31 pm

Sure would be interesting, even stupid, if English speaking kite companies printed "mast" on their LEIs referring to the STRUTS!
Of course they would never as it is simply the wrong term!
And it has become common practice to use the term "strut less" for LEIs with out said vertical structural element.
Can you fathom referring to this component as a "mast"?
Wake up people, just because the worlds leading Kite Board Hydro Foiling country uses the word "mat" does NOT make if correct to keep calling it such in English!
In addition it is so easy to see who could be the founding father of the base of most all of our current designs calls this part.
http://nextfoils.com/foils/
He would have NEVER even considered calling a STRUT a mat (French) mast (English)!

Fully agree.
Why do we not use a sailing vocabulary? Instead we use aviation one.
I thought foilboarding is about sailing seas rather than flying skies ;)

As noted above I really don't care what word is used, but RH if you want closure or need a logical reason, keep
In mind that in English usage the word "strut" mainly is used to describe a sub-part of some multi-part assembly (like a car suspension) and not a main or principal part. Some examples:
Jumper struts on fractional sailing rig.
McPherson struts in car suspension.
Landing gear struts on fixed landing gear planes.
Hope that eases the pain...

But Revhead, surely the makers of the funny fish you love so much can't be wrong?

I agree, hydrofoils have been around for 50+ years and the vertical support element has always been called a strut. Before that, struts were the vertical supports that hold the propeller shaft under the hull.

I have to admit though, I have called it a mast regularly now because I've heard/read it so often. I'd say it's 50/50 usage now, but I think that's fine. Everyone usually knows what you're talking about.

Are you saying this shows that mast is the right word or not? I think this passage proves that it is not how mast has been used in the past. All of this is about supporting something up in the air. A vertical support for something under the water (propeller shaft, hydrofoil) is a strut.

I'm cool with strut or mast though :thumb:

i guess it depends on whether you think of it as the board supporting the foil or the foil supporting the board/rider.
I'm saying mast sounds correct. Its an upright pole that supports the board above the foil

Ah, I see what you're saying!

I'm still on the "strut" side though :D
