Leash...enemy of the foiler?

Postby NYKiter » Sun Oct 29, 2017 9:39 pm

Been doing strapless water starts and this seems to be a hazard as my arm and board get caught in it....

Get one of the new short hooked-in leashes, issue solved. I think most brands now offer these. I've been using one for a couple years and haven't had any issues when foiling.

yes, unless you are doing unhooked stuff there is no need. Have been using a shorty Cab version for the year, so much better!

At first glance I thought you were referring to a "board leash" ! :duh: Silly me

This is a Spark page that I wrote for Hayling Kitesurf Assoiciation about the benefit of short leashes.

nicely done. I have the orange cab one. Well marked and went from the floppy banging of leg, then putting it once around the back to get rid of slack....to not even noticing the thing now. There are enough things to catch on a foil!

freeride foiling?
go BRM style, no leash/integral leash, no stopper, no trim cleat, no dangling lines at all, no problem!
You can use a tiny kite foiling, so don't complain about needing a trim cleat etc.
Really not needed for freeride.

Yes, you are right, I like that too :-)

I use a short leash though, the same as for waveriding/boards.

Good when windy and 3.5 m2 kite, where I find it nice to have the safety option as it is a biiiit of wind now.

But otherwise, the short leash is ONLY used to avoid the risk of accidentally releasing the kite, or the loop popping out - so I have it in suicide most often, because of that.

A few times without the leash yes, when it was on another harness, nice and free
