Mounting a hydrofoil on your TT

Postby RadDrDuke » Wed Nov 01, 2017 1:47 am

I am interested in a high performance twin tip with the ability to convert to a foilboard.

Basically I'm suggesting drilling holes in your TT to mount the foil and putting foam padding on top for grip/flotation. Then when it's TT conditions you can remove the foil, put on straps, and ride.

Has anyone done this and have feedback?

Seems it would be great for travel, now that I foil so much my travel gear is getting a bit complicated...

I bolted a Zeeko Carver onto a CrazyFly Door (150x50). I added a piece of pine between the foil mount and TT to strengthen the mount point and give extra flotation (shinn style). I ride the Door like a direction with a deckpad and no foot straps.
Worked fine.

That challenge arises that you want stiffness at the for the foil connection but need flexibility at the tips for a high performance TT. You want a nice nose scoop for touch downs on a foil board but wont get that on a TT.

So... yourl end up with a compromise of foil board and Tt performance.

My conclusion is that you will be able to achieve medium performance TT and foil board. But not a high performance.
Also if you just bolt a foil onto a high performance TT without adding reinforcement the board will most likely fail in time. Normal TT's are not designed for the point loading a foil on plane has.

The new ierofoil amphidrome thing (Twinfix?) features a mounting system designed around the standard 90 x 165 hole pattern.

You can buy the fitting kit separately and clip it onto your twin tip. Saves drilling holes in your twin tip. I imagine it would help a little bit with the flex you get from a twin tip.

My mate made a HF and mounted it on a twintip by just drilling four holes. I've ridden it - works fine.

I drilled foil mounting holes and front footstrap holes in a Flysurfer Flywave. Epoxy in from the top some T nuts to bolt the foil into and use Rivnuts in the extra footstrap holes to give 2 front straps. I also made up a plate from paulownia wood to fit underneath and reduce flex. It works well as a vacation board, but is realistically too narrow as a foil deck at 39 cm. If I were to make another, it would be with another Mutant style, snowboard type construction board with a removable plate BUT wider, to give more floor for dancing.....maybe an RRD Toxic Wave or the like.

For a while until it breaks. Also deck flex makes for less responsive foiling.
