Bloody onshore dumping wave combo.

Postby plummet » Wed Nov 08, 2017 6:27 pm

I went out the other day in an onshore. At the tide I went out in theres a bit of a shelf and the waves pitch and dump. The waves weren't too big, but big enough to push me back when ever I got close to the shelf. The shelf is at chest height and you need to get past this point to water start.

Man how incredibly frustrating. I've get within a few meters of being able to water start and boom a wave would clean me out and take me back to the beach. Argh! I waited for lulls in the sets, body dragged, ran like f***, duck dived tried starting before the shelf. Nothing worked. Took me 40 minutes of being smashed back before I snuck through and managed to get a water start and get out.

Argh!!!!!!!!

Been there done that...
BUT unlike you we have a HUGE clean sandy beach and it is RARE to be exactly onshore. Oh and as MED sea NO tide to cope with...
The pleasure of getting out though is well worth it IMHO, though sometimes in lighter wind mother nature has beat me and NO session...
Sounds like you got lucky (skill) and got to fly your foil! :thumb:

that sounds so frustrating! I haven't exactly experienced that, but have had a variety of issues with needing to get outside kelp beds. In some goofy situations like this, I've thought about getting the foil out to deeper water by other means ... like swim it out with a surfboard and tie it off to something, even bring a small anchor and buoy if need be. Then body drag out without the foil, pick it up and go. Seems like too much effort ... that is until you've wasted half a session trying and not succeeding, versus 10 minutes advance planning. ARGH indeed!

Ive also some frustating/funny situation:

So i enter my local lagoon coming from the sea, foiling on my 101 mast, i foil inside the lagoon around 1km deep inside, i atempt a tack, i crash... and in a radius of around 500m the water was around 40cm deep... :o

That day was 9-12 knots. So no other kitesurfing equipment was better. But.... I should have busted out the kitebuggy, that would have been much more fun!

So ultimately you are right. Wrong tool for the conditions

except this and a 14-17m kite:

22" wide and quad keels gets it done in 8-12 knots, and 12" water!

I would rather just run a short mast on my foil than deal with that barge.

Short mast + quick, confident waterstart with angled mast is the key to foil in such conditions. After I bough the 70 cm mast I can foil in conditions that were impossible before. But I will try that only if clear sandy bottom beach!
