DukeSilver, good story well told
and precisely what one experienced quite often indeed, a lot when it was "new", but still sometimes when riding at the same spots.
It takes time for these changes, here all the "slightly sceptical but still interested" ones has started foiling now, so it gets bigger in number of riders now.
Even before this "step up" this summer here, we could be 10 foilers out on some days
Now you are more and more often out in the summer/autumn and see some foiling you dont even know - THAT is almost weird, and this is a good sign of it being more mainstream and not just a few

I got used to it. Have been kite foiling since 2005... Things are changing though, the fact that you can get a complete new set for around 1000 euros and have more fun in light wind than mowing the lawn an a 2000 euros 18m kite is creating the snow ball effect.

Foil: I cannot imagine foil will outnumber TT.
The majority of peolpe are basic riders who don't want the hassle of a directional.
And I am sure it will always be like that.
We shall see

Your perception is possibly because you hunt down and focus on flat water TT locations?
At my local the majority are SB riders. Typically gnarly old windsurfer and surfers looking for the wave riding fix!.

On light wind days TT are always out numbered by foils even if there is only one on the water because 0 TT can ride in the kind of wind foils can.
What's the hassle with a directional ?

Maybe I am never at spots or the beach when the wind is light
The spots I go to always have few foilers.
But, whatever. Everyone has an opinion. We shall see.

At our local spot last year there was only one guys riding on foil. This is a spot where 90% of our riding days are below 15 knots. After many have seen the performance in 7-11knots from the guys foiling a few guys are now foiling this year. I think we are now at least 10+ foilers (and i am one of the new one, totally hook!). BTW, going to Cuba soon with friends....we will be 6 foilers
Next year here i am sure the hydrofoil will see a huge increase in popularity.

I agree with Toby
Hydrofoil allows doing a few things way better than TT namely speed/upwind/ lightwind.
However they will never surpass the TT for jumping/tricks/freestyle/shallow water/and general messing around without having to be perfect all the time.
In short you have to be a better hydrofoiler than I will ever be to do any of that stuff on one with more confidence than TT

Had another Nigel no mates session yesterday. 9-15 knots. Powered to all hell on my 12m Chrono. A sweet session indeed.
I'm amused that I can be rediculiously powered on the foil yet the SB and TT riders don't even bother turning up at the beach.
