Tacking! More Power Scotty!!

Postby foilonfoil » Tue Feb 06, 2018 2:44 am

Tacking continues to improve but I am finding I don't have enough power at the end of the tack and my board touches down. The kite kite may now be at the bottom of the window and I have to sine to get my speed going again. I may be slowing down too much through the tack and other than going faster entering the tack(?), looking for more feedback.

Any ideas? Thanks!

My advice: Find somebody that got the tacks dialed to watch you trying to tack and then give you feedback based on that.
It can be so many different big and little things that can make it or break it... I think the above would be the most helpful for you.

Cheers,
Frank

Doing a small pump off your back foot just before you move it off the board is key to having the momentum to come out of the tack.

Watch a race video from somewhere with terrible wind like China or Oman, all the top guys have mastered the exit pump and do it prolifically in the really light stuff to stay on foil. It's less obvious when riders are powered up.

I guess it's the same as when on a surfboard (or a TT in a low backloop transition), a downloop always makes things easier in terms of regaining juice at the end of the transition. (with LEIs at least)
Except I find it a bit harder on the foil as you have to have your feet back in the right spots to handle that spike of power and ride it out. The foil is nowhere near as forgiving as the surfboard, and I got beaten a few times when unbalanced. Practice, more practice!

Sweet! I was not even aware this was happening.

There are a couple of things you might give a try related to equipment. One is try flying a little bigger kite than you normally would and just fly it de-powered such that you have a little more power on hand when coming out of the tack. Shorter flying lines may help the kite move across the window quicker and give you a little bit of extra power at the end of the tack. There are also some things you can try regarding technique. If you are flying a high aspect foil kite, you might try sheeting out with the bar when going through the tack. It may seems a bit counter intuitive at first, but sheeting out high performance foil kites increases flying speed, which in turn helps generate lift/pull. You might also try carrying more and more board speed into the tack. Also you can experiment with keeping the board a little higher out of the water at the end of the tack which can help provide some more glide time on the foil until the kite can pick up some speed. Best of luck, Dave

True - but did not work as well back then, it is 3 years old so many tacking touchdowns !

Today, and since long time ago, he could/can tack fluidly, so things has changed a lot since then :thumb:
