Basic nooby question.

I have an old twin tip that I'm considering bolting a foil to.

Is there any reason why this wouldn't work/ shouldn't be done? It's 138 x 41

I've never ridden a foil.

Thanks

It is a bit difficult to learn to ride a TT hydrofoil as board is small.

Another issue could be, that it almost (or do) sinks, at least if a heavy alufoil.

Even if it does not sink, but almost, it can be difficult to spot on the watersurface.

Thirdly, it will most likely be too soft and flex, so not that good for hydrofoiling.

Yes it can work and has been done !

Would not recommend it though...

Also to add to this. The board will probably fail in time because it is not designed to take the additional point loading and stress a foil provides. Also most
tt's dont have much nose rocker, So it will be a lot harder not to dig the nose in during touch downs

Think about bolting an additional plate or adding some more glass/carbon to the board. Test the assembly floats before going deep. heavy alloy foils will need some board buoyancy light carbon or home made wooden will not. You can add boyance to the board by putting a full length foam deck grip on.

Here's a pic of my foil bolted to my mutant.

Snip....

WHY ON GODS GREEN EARTH WOULD ANYONE MOUNT A RUDDER FACING DOWN ON A FOIL....

It will have less turbulent flow from the mast, thus more effective.

Also, it will reduce the risk of destroying your rear wing if you are on low water - as the rudder will take the load, and the fuselage/mast is way stronger if impact on the rudder, than if you get one side of the wing into the bottom - then your hydrofoil will break very easy because of the extreme torque :o

So many reasons to have it facing down - in fact I can not see one single reason for having it facing upwards ???

Having said that, it is usually DIY who uses a rudder nowadays, as the rear wing is often flat (a lot easier to build), so a rudder is needed to stabilize.

Most hydrofoils uses a rear wing with upswept tips, so they work as a rudder, and are away from the mast turbulence too, and less parasitic drag - the most efficient way by all means.

But a rudder works too, and facing down is IMO the best choice, so plummet did it just right IMO :thumb:

Rather grind a common place twin tip fin than the more important, expensive and harder to replace rear wing or fuse. You can ding the hell out of the rudder without any appreciable impact on performance.
