Question about sanding Hydrofoil for less whistling

Postby krivo » Tue Apr 17, 2018 12:21 am

Hey guys I'm new to foiling and got the LF Rocket foil for a few months now.

It started very silent and hardly ever whistled but now it's singing non stop which drives me crazy as I really enjoyed it when it was completely quite.

I read that I got to sand some of the trailing edge of the mast but not sure by how much and if any other part could cause whistling?

Perhaps there is a video on YouTube with instruction you guys can recommend?

I have had the same problem on 3 masts from 2 brands, and it was so easy to shut it up for good.
get some wet/dry paper of grade 600 or 800, tightly wrap it once around a bit of smooth and level sided wood of around the size of a cigarette packet, wet the paper (recommended) then in long single full length strokes gently run the block along the sharp trailing edge at an angle of around 30deg, one side at a time, stop when you have completed about 5 or 6 gentle strokes, wipe clean and give it a try, this worked instantly for me on each of the 3 masts that had this annoying problem.
Silence is Golden.

the original noise was different on 2 of the masts one was a very high pitch scream, on another it was a deep Hum, but both disappeared completely with a few moments work.

I did get the chance to speak to the tech guy who works with Florin Grubber the x foil world champion who happened to be on the same beach I was sailing on for a weeks holiday, and he showed me what he does as race prep for Mr Grubber, he had small cuts of fine wet/dry and a bottle of water which he used to drop water in small drops along every surface of the foil, mast edges and all surfaces along with both wings and all edges, he explained to me that any imperfection or oily mark will disturb the flow/direction of the droplets he was dripping from the bottle, and if any imperfections are not removed, then they can cause a hum or break up the smooth water flow over the surfaces which will impact on performance, and this may reduce speed, maybe not a lot but enough to make a difference in a race.
interesting stuff, and he was so passionate about this science and method of preparation.he took ages working on the mast and wings to find and remove anything he regards as not good.
Too advanced for me to bother with apart from a few points, how to stop the hum, and to stop holding the mast with hands full of sun tan oil, I also wash down my carbon bits in lukewarm soapy water every so often to remove any contaminates.

The "singing" can be a REALLY tricky one.....

You dont know what it is, dont have to be the mast, can just as well be the wing or the stabilizer, og the screws and joints.

Even wings made in the same mold, can be different, some sings others dont, if just a tad difference in how much resin and how it is finished.

Yours started silent, so I would look after imperfections in mast and wings, as small scratches can also make noise.

It can be the classic trailing edge of "something" being too round or too sharp, but it can also be the convex angle before the trailing edge.

Some in here gave the advice to try putting tape on the trailing edges one at a time, till the singing either stops or at least changes - then you are one step nearer the smoking gun / cause if it comes from there.

But as said, it is really tricky - if a typical cause on a specific brand, others might be able to tell you what it is, but because yours was silent at first, this is hardly possible :(

Ive 100% success on fixing my friends and my carbon masts "singing" just by sanding the trailing edge of the mast, it seems that most of the cases are related to that. Have no idea about aluminium masts.

I have the fear that sanding an aluminum mast will just destroy the paint and the anodization. (and void any warranty)

Check the wings for chips and clean them up, with epoxy or glazing compound. It's usually the mast but it can be caused by imperfections in the wings also. Good luck.

good to see it's exactly the same method for any type of foil.
