MHL Lift board mod question

Postby grigorib » Wed May 02, 2018 12:37 am

I’ve got a 2013 MHL Lift board. Pretty, carbon, nice nose scoop. Foil mount holes are a bit non-standard width/length.
Does anyone know what is that plate under carbon where mast attaches?
Solid metal with thread in it? Or metal with attached nuts?
Would it hold if I drill and thread new holes?

I did. Nick said "our bases should be strong enough to drill through, but I try to recommend against it".
The conversion I need to have done is from 3.375"x5.5" on board end to 3.5"x6.5" on mast end.

If plate is solid metal I would drill in, tap M6 and threadlock M6 pins.
However if it's only a plate holding steel anchors in place the plan would fail.

What about just drill or file the holes in the base plate longer instead, just like zeeko and a few others, so it can fit both boards ?

Easy if carbon, and if alu you can always buy a new plate, if you screw up the holes.
Beware corrosion might be altered when you change the holes in aluminum.

Maybe even buy a plate with the holes that fit both, if compatible with your mast holes.

the plate in my MHL Lift was ply wood with stainless T-nuts. eventually moisture got into it , wood rot resulted. I core drilled thru the bottom of the board - filled with epoxy and glass mil fiber along with the T-nuts, and all is well.
