Lighter fuselage for Slingshot Hoverglide?

Postby galewarning » Tue May 08, 2018 2:29 pm

Love the modular aspect of the SS/Hoverglide foils, but man is the entire foil heavy... especially the fuselage*.
Anybody out there make a lighter fuselage that would work with the SS wings? Maybe SS is working on one...
Or anyone make an entire wings/fuselage assembly that fits the SS aluminum mast bolt spacing?

*I also have the longer windsurf/SUP fuselage and it's even heavier.

TIA,

-Barry

Looking into this last year I found the screw spacing is about 50mm on SS mast.
I have a zeeko and thought of adapting it, to get a cheaper mid length SS mast.
The zeeko spacing is 48-ish if I recall.
I have seen pictures of fuselages in which one of the holes in a fuselage is milled out to a slot instead of a circle, allowing use of masts with slightly different spacing. This should not hurt the strength of a solid fuse much I think. Have not done any hacking on my fuse though. I think SS and LF are close enough to do this also, but not sure. LF might be wider than SS, and spacing may vary between years/models.

If you want to make a light fuse for SS you could make a mold from your fuse and make one of carbon with a lighter core, but that would be a decent amount of work. You could also probably trim mass from the rear of the SS fuselage, if you are good at cutting, grinding and polishing. But it would still be pretty heavy.

Yeah, it looks pretty bulky for this day...

You can MaxGyver a thinner, lighter, more elegant and very modular aluminum Slingshot Ghost Whisper / Moses fuselage to fit Hoverglide mast (hole spacing matches but it would take some grinding on the mast or making a carbon/epoxy or hard plastic filling for the fuselage to attach the mast flush just as you have already),
I can trade you the wing/fuselage/stabilizer for $590

I measured SS mast mount spacing to be 50.8 mm, which is essentially 2", which is what the spec might be if they had these machined in the US to a nice even 2 inches. The fuselage seems to be machined from 1" x 1-1/8" bar stock. I'll weight the two fuselages I have and report back, but they are little piggies. The switch fuselage really can't be trimmed in the rear half, since that would prevent it from being... switched... but the regular length kite model could be drastically trimmed/tapered in the tail half.
And the wings... they could drop a lot of weight if they used glass micro-balloons in the filler resin. I also suspect, until I snap one in half, the wings are chopped fibers and resin. Seems they would be lighter if they had a foam/wood core.
Might be trying to make a diamond from a lump of coal here. The Hoverglide is a modular, mainstream and affordable foil... But carbon corrupts!

The Ghost Whisper fuselage to mast connection is tapered from 13mm width to 9mm, 13mm deep, 127mm long at widest (same 15 degrees tapered on all sides), 6mm hole spaced at 48mm. You can easily taper the Hoverglide mast to fit Ghost Whisper fuselage.

71cm mast, wings and fuselage weigh 5.3lbs total.

Kiting corrupts, carbon corrupts absolutely :)

Hoverglide masts are really heavy too...

Probably easier to just sell the hoverglide and buy something used and carbon. At least the hoverglides hold their resale value pretty well.

I used SS Hoverglide incl School Masts for my first season and was fully happy with the steps it supported me as advertised.
Alongside with growing mast lengths and weights my wish grew to lower the full rig weight and I finally decided to swap
with a Moses Fluente, which cost me 530 on top. Weight almost halfened (!!) and you can´t do any better for a relativ low Investment.

Hoverglide is a great learning tool but so heavy that my girlfriend simply can't deal with the full length mast....hard to even pull it up on its side to start. Don't hack something together, sell and get something lighter.

Good advice
