Specific grease for Hydrofoil

Postby gigibianchi » Fri Sep 28, 2018 9:26 am

Is there a specific grease that is better to use to avoid corrosion between aluminium screwing and stainless steel screws, or any type of grease can work?

There are many suitable greases.
I use a water proof grease as used in boat trailer wheel bearings.
All good after 12 months.

TefGel. It's very sticky so things don't come undone, unlike the other anti-corrision stuff I tried.

Lanolin based (sheep's wool) marine grease is what is recommended by some manufacturers. Slingshot is now including a container of it with their foils. Lanocote is a brand that you can get at an autoparts or marine supply store. The Lanocote seems to be kind of a thick grease, whereas the stuff SS is providing is slightly more fluid. Wish we'd have had either of those for our first foil. We left it together in our lesson truck for, I don't know, 6 months, before we tried to disassemble it. *tried*

RL-boards foil came with Weicon Anti-Seize paste, what is made of calcium hydroxide. It's very corrosive and I am afraid to use it because I bet sometime I get it to my hands -> eyes.
Would copper paste do the same job?

I don't know is it used widely, but some guys use tar spray to car bolts to prevent them to rust/seize..

I use this stuff, works well. I cover all joins and screw threads, assemble foil and wipe off excess.

I suggest that anything that keeps water out of the threads would work. For example, you can lube the bolts with petroleum jelly; in fact, the supplied with foil grease looks like trivial Vaseline. For even more substantial water isolation one can use pipe cement. Obviously, pipe sealant is something to apply only at the outer most 5-10 mm, and not the entire thread. With water isolation you don't even have to bother frequently disassembling the foil for prolong periods, because there is nothing to corrode.

Bought some when I was back in NZ for my LF foil, and the bloody thing wouldn't stay together. Just kept unscrewing itself, especially mast to plate.

Didn't do anything with the SS foil, but it rarely got used in salt water.

Axis foils came with TefGel. I'm sold on that stuff :thumb:

I found this MPL-EP grease (multi purpose lithium grease) at the closest hardware store. Do you guys think it could work? :thumb:

Another vote for tefgel. Put mine together with it. It’s used extensively in marine environments. Every stainless bolt that goes into an aluminum mast on a sailboat should have it on there if you ever want to take it out again. It’s a bummer, I’m sure quite a few people figured out too late that galvanic corrosion is expensive.
