Mast length....?

Postby francis luengo » Thu Nov 22, 2018 11:11 pm

Why and what length do you prefer for foiling with small board and big wings...?
I ride 101 with 633 wing and 120 cm board but next week I will test a 91 cm mast.
I' m very confortable with my 101 because I can ride It high and the wing doesn' t get out if the water.

I ride a few different foils and I found 90cm too long (too slow to react), 55cm to short (too easy to breach) and settled on 70cm/75cm for flat water and surf.

I have 101 and 71 mast with 633. 101 for choppy conditions, 71 for flat water and now some waves. Probably also 101 when you use faster wing.

I use the 70 on the Naish Medium Surf wing in large bay chop. It is a very forgiving wing for breaches and the 70 gives a more connected feel to the wing.
And fitted to a pocket board the setup fits in the car with no disassembly, yep, I’m lazy.

Yep I am in the same movie, I cut my 36" to 30" roughly 75cm seems to be the perfect middle ground between maneuverability but yet you can pretty much ride through any chop/swells without having to adjust your height too much and you can edge it nicely in flatter conditions

I think you will get many different answers here, at least till now....

I use a 91,5 cm "short" mast often, with my 1200 Surf wing if a bit lighter wind, other times I use a 100 cm mast, 50/50 I think.
These are the ones I change between whether I want a short one or not.

My 83 cm is too short, I NEVER use it with wave wings, doesnt work at all for me, no maneuverability left (without risking catching an edge of the board) and no fun as you dont "hover" high anymore...
83 cm I only use in 5-7 knots of wind with a bigger marginal wind board, and ONLY if wind is dead onshore, otherwise the normal lengths 90-100.

28 inch (71cm) in this video.

I am inspired by Bigtone's comments to try a shorter mast...

I use a 75cm mast with 82cm wide wings ... works fine for me. Keep meaning to try my 90 again, but last time it felt slow and cumbersome. I have zero issues with "pumping" it up and over the swell and waves. Wind is mostly onshore, to a little cross-on if that matters ...

42” board. 590/633 wings.
105cm mast for deep water and have been riding 71cm for shallows. Hopefully 2019 Moses line will feature the 81cm to replace my 71

Measured my alloy mast at 87 plus 1 cm plate. Think it was advertised as 90cm. Have always felt a little higher than I wanna be when I put the foil at the best spot for it to harvest our small swell. In most of my foiling conditions I want the foil about a foot and a half below the surface. Any deeper and there is less push. I tend to want to have the board only about a foot above the water so am going to cut about 10cm off in hopes of getting both foil and rider height where I want it at the same time.

What do people generally think is the ideal foil depth to get the most out of a wave?
