I spent 1 month (September) in SoCa and could ride every day with the Speed4 Lotus 18.0 and a Radical4 138.

I had one day with 25-30 knots on my Cronix 10.0 in Malibu.

Weight 82 kg / 180 lbs

My trimm on the SP4 Lotus 18.0 -> Mixer = B +1 ; C +2 -> better upwind performance but frontstalls more easily

Chris
would you recommend the sonic 15 or 18? 185lbs on a flysplit L.

Hey Jason,

I agree with Chris. The 18 has plenty of top-end and you will appreciate the bottom-end of the 18 even on a Flysplit L. I weigh 15 LBS less than you and I would definitely want the 18 for lightwind days.

Yea I already ordered the 18 just wanted to make sure. How's the pack down size on it? I sold a Chrono 18 for the sonic and I'm hoping it will be similar.

The pack down is similar to the 18 Chrono, you just will be happy that you will have fewer if any tangled bridles. :D

Just received my 15m, it's long :D

Anyways, it's been a long time since I sold the 19m speed3 deluxe, and lookin at the bridles, it seems there are a lot less of them compared to speed3 - is this true or just an optical illusion?

Normally I ride strapless only but this was a kite I wanted to try with twintip after many years :o

This might be a recurrent question, which size Sonic-FR do you suggest for a rider on a 140 TT 75kgs ? 15 or 18m ?

The flysurfer reseller told me it was useless to go on 18m with a board below 160cm because on his words: "you cannot transfer the power of the kite to the board".

My current biggest kite is a Vegas 12m (limited low end), usually i don't kite with that kite below 15 knot.

We often have 8-13 knot wind.

I might want to use it on snow as well but that's not a priority.

Also how about the Chrono V2?

Cheers

I weigh the same as you. I frequently fly the 18 in the winds you describe. I use as small a board as possible, frequently a 130 or 132. A smaller board is just much more fun to ride. I rarely ride my 138cm board with the 18 Sonic, only if the wind is under 10 knots.

As far as using a small board with a big kite, why do you think Toby is using a 129cm board with an 18m Dyno in 20 knots for Airstyle? The smaller board will give you more grip, plus the Sonic has plenty of depower, so you are not going to get ripped downwind unless the wind is gusting well over 20 knots.

Haven't tried the Chrono 2 yet.

My Sonic arrived just after the end of the snow season, so I haven't tried it on the snow yet, but I can tell it will be excellent as I prefer it to the 18 Chrono and 21m & 15m FS Speed 4 Lotus on the water. If anyone wants a 21 or 15 Speed 4, I have them up for sale.

I'm a little bit that 18 is really really a big kite, but I have so far no experience with foil and I don't have the opportunity to try so it's a difficult choice.

Up to what wind speed can you hold the 18 and what's the max wind speed you can launch ? As for the 15?

Some people said that 18 or 15 won't make much difference as the 18 is heavier perhaps goes 1 knot lower range ? In that case I'd prefer a kite that turn faster, though i'd like to have good hang time.

i weigh 70kg and have the sonic 18m it is remarkably direct and sporty compared to the lotus 21m and 19m.......its my goto kite from 6-13kts..........and from 10 to 13 kts you can get from 20 to 30 foot jumps depending on your skill level. Thats why you want the 18m.......... dont have the 15m but a 12m lotus..........but find i like it in 15-20 kts.........i will prob purchase a 15m for that 10 to 16 kts range. I can launch the 18m sonic in very little space if its blowing under10kts.......literally 10 feet from trees ........but above you need to make sure you have some space behind for sure. So i would say if your not concerned with jumping as high as you can in low winds the 15 will be fine .....if you want to get every bit of boost down low then 18m. Of course you can also get tremendous speed with a proper board. I have yet to depower my 18m as it has a large depowr range........but with winds over 12kts i prefer to have someone land it as backstalling seems very risky due to its power........i have used the safety to land it if no one was around. (any numbers to be taken with grain of salt, approximations only)
