How to properly wash Sonic FR and other foil kites?

Postby fun2kite » Mon May 02, 2016 4:32 am

Hi All,

My 15M Sonic FR is getting dirty and also has some small oil stains as we have tar floating in the water sometimes.

How to properly clean the kite?
I take it using soap could damage the coating?
What is the best surface to place the kite onto when washing?
I guess, rubbing the oil stains off would also damage the kite. So what is the best way to remove stains?

Thank you all for advise.

Regards,

-D.

I will use a tarp or mat in front of a wheely bin. With the kite in front of the bin, Using a garden hose, I clean and roll sections of the kite until it is all rolled up on top of the bin. I hang in the garage to dry over night.

Just spot clean tar/oil off with solvents. I have tried many, various alcohols, acetone, turpentine, kerosene, toluene etc on the fabric and they don't seem to damage it, but still spot test first.

I almost never wash my kites, but very rarely I will rinse in a very large bucket/container. Be careful though excessively doing so will wear the fabric or even damage it.
