Well it's not actually that you abuse how ratios are written it's more you abuse how fractions are written or somehow expect people to make the logic jump that a whole number like 4 is in fact a fraction like 1/4. For something like 4:2:1 this can work fine because the ratios as fractions are the same albeit in reverse but for something like 6:2:1 you get a problem where if you jump to the fractions the ratios don't match. This would be why in math you can write 1/4 as 0.25 but not 4.
Yes you can use use binary but your intended meaning is 0.01:0.1:1 or 1:10:100.
