flysurfer 12m speed lotus - Repair help almost broken stearing line

Postby kiter4fun123 » Thu Jul 06, 2017 9:46 pm

Hi,

I managed to cross my leading and stearing lines today. Didn't noticed and had 30minutes riding resulting in some heavy wear on my left stearing line.
I've order new lines at the brand line service shop. However I'm in the middle of vacation and don't wont to miss any surf.

How can I best temorpary reinforce my stearing line? (It's around 60% down from what I can see)
My Idea is to sew a parallell equivalent line strenght beside it, would that be ok?

thx Jakob

See photo of lines that were dammaged below:
(as you can see it's the green one that is critical, the other will hold if I don't cross the lines again  )

i dont see a significant amount of damage in the pictures. but those lines are very strong. im pretty sure they will last through your vacation especially since they are the back lines. heres an interesting thing i tried to bust one of the very thin white spare lines that come with the kite with my bare hands but could not do it no mattter how hard i tried. thyre probally rated at least 250lbs.

If line wear is only at very end only you could tie figure eight knot to all lines bypassing damaged part to be sure. Just try to be sure to match length of lines by type (front/back). Naturally few mm difference does not matter.

But usually crossed lines do not cause damage like that and to location shown on picture as crossed lines are crossed few meters down from end. Is it some loop splicing thing? So windrider's tip is good as well. If you are on nuking winds maybe then tie fig-8 while waiting new lines and make you feel more relaxed on your lines..

Looks to me like the tail is coming out of the splice in the images shown. Wear from crossed lines should occur about 10 meters south of the area you show in the photograph. Is it your only kite and bar? Easiest to use a second bar to finish the vacation.

Jorwis suggestion is reasonable but beware: both improperly tapered splices and figure 8 knots reduce the strength of the line. I would consider riding the kite as is but no big jumps over shallow water or land and no riding out farther than you are willing to swim.

A .01 steel guitar string bent into a fid and an razor blade would be a handy tool to re-splice new end loops onto the line. Very easy to do.

Hi!

Thanks for hints, tips and opinions.

I learned today that flysurfer support already
have posted the replacement lines I ordered yesturday.
(really great and fast service :thumb: )

So I will only need to go on dammaged lines for maximum 1-2 sessions.
And not in strong winds as I have a smaller kite for 16+ kn.

I might go for the backup figure 8 line. Sounds like a simple and quick solution.

Good surf to everyone :)

Your lines are in my opinion not significantly damaged.
I fully agree with Nem0 it is the end of the splice.

like Nem0, no problem with that and the tag(right) is sew on the splice, compressing the splice

for ; My Idea is to sew a parallell equivalent line strenght beside it, would that be ok?
never do that!!!!!
sewing thread are not as strong as line

Hi,

For the records: this is how I did a temporary repair.
Just used one of the lines in the repair kit, cut it to the correct length,
passed it through the connector ring and made a knot directly below.
Thus if the ordinary line breaks the yellow line will act as a backup.
(has had 3 session on this settup - 2 light wind and one medium wind 18kn - the line is still ok no more dammage)

Anybody knows the strength of these repairkit lines?
