Difference Flysurfer Speed5 vs Sonic2 18.0?

Postby Toby » Fri Oct 20, 2017 10:12 pm

Would be interested in hearing a difference in percentage between the two kites:

Lift
Hangtime
Turning Speed
Wind Range

Anyone?

Thanks!

Please have the video camera running when you try them :D

You're 90kg or so, aren't you? 18m will be a handful to solo land and launch over 18 knots, but you could probably ride it to 25. Hang time is great, and you get another little lift when you redirect (another grab!) but I had zero success with any trick that required a downloop on the Sonic2. Sonic_1_ I have no issues...

Be interesting to see what you think. Micro hook use will require accurate trimming and if you stuff up and splash in, it'll be fun...

95 kg.

Tried the S5 18 in lighter wind already. Downloops after slides are not possible.

But I would use it for air with rotation tricks...since my Rebel is too fast for those tricks I want to do. Need a slow gliding kite to be able to land them.

I had a lot of sessions with both kites. The Sonic 2 18 is lighter, faster in the flight window and better in every regard, such lift, hang time and stability. Nevertheless the SP5 18 is very durable and fun to fly. For my weight(75 Kilos)the Sonic 2 18 is the perfect light wind kite for basic airstyle tricks.
Cheers
Carlo

Yeah the loop's pull is too much in the horizontal, which is fine for a transition but not if you're wanting any lift from it.

You might get more joy from a 15. Or longer lines? IIRC they ship them with 21 plus 6.

So you prefer Sonic over Speed5?
Are you only on TT?
What is the topend of the 18?

I would have thought, that with your weight the 15 would be big enough

When I compared the 12m Speed 5 to the Sonic1 11m back to back, I'd say the sonic had about 10% more height and hangtime.

I never tried 18m in Sonic1, but everyone said 18m was the best size that year. 18m is definitely my favorite size of the sonic 2.

Hi Toby,
not your weight and too low experience with Sp5. Would guess Sonic2 in every point 10-20 % better.

But there is a guy who used both kites in the big sizes together maybe more than anybody else, is around your weight and does similar highest level old school stuff:

"Benny" you may contact via info@kitejunkie.com

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmSGcdppMoM

He can tell you for sure :)

Oh and if you also want to explore the world of "stunt kite flying" as Greg Drexler in this video

https://vimeo.com/173938682

than you will be equipped with a Sonic2. Not so easy as a LEI, but already managed to helicopter, drift and fly it completely backwards (turned 180°) at least on a foil. :D

I absolutely love my Sonic1 18m. Most likely my favorite FS and I’ve had many. Hated my Sonic1 11m though, horrible wing tip collapse. My Sonic2 11m is much better.
