Psycho2 convert to FLS

Postby coffeeking » Thu Mar 22, 2018 9:35 pm

I've been putting together bits to convert my old psycho2 17 to a slightly safer system/bar. I have a full infinity2 bar setup except FLS line and I'm trying to assess a couple of items - not keen on the current rotor leash rear line setup.

I'm considering copying the system on my speed5 but I'm not sure I trust knotting the front line mid-span and the psycho2 lines don't have a specific attachment location. I could larks head a 1/4 inch ring into the line and attach to that but I feel it could slide up the main line.

Has anyone done a similar conversion?

Saw into flying line loop, it is easier then sounds. Find a piece of bridal line, run ends of it into flying line at proper location, saw it in. I had it done on my Sonic FR 15 year ago.

Have you changed the Psycho2 to 4 lines? If it's a 3 line kite you are in for a surprise.

Attaching a 5th line half way up a flying line infinity bar style can be done by splicing a loop into the line or with a prussik knot. A marks head will slide too much. The prussik will slide a little with each safety release but is nice because you can tense the line without an internal elastic. Spliced is nicest.

I would suggest to go for a FDS setup. I have done that succesfully on a Phycho2 10 and 13m.

Hmm it came as a 4 line from the previous owner (V down near the bar) - not sure if the bar is original, but I guess it is.

I can't seem to find details of the FDS that doesn't leave some of it to the imagination (kite end) but I'm guessing it's a 5th line the full length from leash to middle of canopy?

Ooh a prusik - hadn't considered that! Hmm will be easier to work with for sure - not sure I'd trust my splicing ability on stuff this small. I could mark the line and check after releases.

Thanks for your feedback folks, and sorry for the slow reply - been a busy birthday weekend!

The FDS I've seen all have a bridle at the kite to spread the load. There are a couple of videos on YouTube showing how the Psycho4 flags to safety, and line diagrams on flysurfer.com so you could make your own easily enough...

Yeah I noticed that on one image and ended up giving FS a call. They recommended not using FDS on the Psycho2 due to the shape of the canopy not being ideal, but going for FLS instead. Happy with that, I'll prusik myself a loop and at least have a consistent system across my kites.

Thanks for your help all, much appreciated!

Dug it back out again and unfurled it in the living room. It's 3 line. Weird, was CONVINCED it was 4.

Now time to see how best to split the centre line into 2 and maybe try to replicate the bridle/lines of the P3 or whether to ignore FS advice and go FDS.

Nothing's ever easy!

3->4 line is a lot of work for an old kite. I would go FDS.

Yes, I think I was just coming full circle on that too! The joys of trying to revamp older kit! I'll follow the notation on the P3 line plan and make up my own FDS - careful testing in light wind should give me a hint if it's going to be problematic.
