I’m just getting into the foil kite game and I’ve been enjoying them with my Cloud CCS bar which has no trim strap. It does have a long 27” throw. I love it’s simplicity and light weight.
Since foil kites are a different beast, how important is a trim strap / cleat?

I'm a cloud rider. Just bought a R1V2, I would say you need a trim strap, it's nothing like a cloud.
It might be doable, but you will struggle so much more.

Depends on whether you want to use the full wind range but I'd say at the upper ends trimming it in a bit makes a big difference - I was out today on a Soul 12m in 15-18 knots and trimming about 30% in made it perfect. Would have been doable without trimming in but not comfortable.

So for free ride you probably don't need to adjust the trimmer much. Once you find a trim you are happy with, I think BRM style should be fine.
If racing, or if pushing the limits of wind range then a trimmer probably makes a bigger difference.

I never use trim jumping unhooked or kiteloops but I use it all the time when foiling. when you are a board twintip or surfboard you just edge hard with the extra power can't do that on a foil. if you tried to put that much power on your foil the wing tends to ventilate as you push more sideways.

I used my Hyperlink 9m UL 30 sessions with trim strap, then set up a minimalist bar without trim and swivel. Used it about 8 sessions now. If wind is at high end I rig rear lines on 50mm longer knots, otherwise keep standard knots. I don't miss it, I thought I would!
My arms are pretty short too. I'm not racing, just freeride around.
