Untangling a bridal

Postby TomW » Fri Oct 26, 2018 10:59 pm

Ok, I dropped my hyperlink 7m in the Waves here in Brazil and one side of the bridals is tangled and all mixed up. I tried to fix it on the beach detataching the Z and made it worse.
I've washed and dried it and will try to fix it .

My thinking is to disassemble the speed system and stake it all out. Start from scratch. Wadda think ?

Even when my foil kite has rolled and the bridles are a mess, I don't detach the bar. For me, it's always easier sorting things out with the bar attached, especially towards the end of the process.

Ok. But I already detached the bar and the Z lines... It's a mess on one side.

What should I do?

No need to detach the speed system/mixer. Easy to put back together if you do but no need.

Loosen the birds nest just as untangling kite lines e.g. like pulling taffy.

Then when it’s loose enough to pull any knots through you start at the kite. Pick an A line and follow it all the way to loop where the center lines attach, pulling through any lines looped around it. Then Pick a Z line at the kite and again follow it to the knots where the lines attach.

Voila! It’s a 1 minute job.

If you separated Z from the rest of the mixer the. You need to do A, then Z, then C then put it back together. But if the whole mixer is together if you just pull A through the loops then Z you are done. B and C will follow.

As the owner of a Chrono and a Hyperlink, I can say that for whatever reason the Hyperlink loves to tangle whereas the Chrono seems impervious to it. Boggles my mind.

I got it tangled on the beach one day, had a buddy step in and try to help but he made the rookie mistake of detaching the flying lines to make things easier. A few minutes later it was a royal mess. I did end up needing to disassemble the speed system to fix it. Tried to avoid it, but in the end I had to. Honestly, should have done so from the beginning. Much less intimidating to do than I expected, and the fact that you have a functioning mirror image makes it really hard to screw up reassembly.

I do the same as Jakemoore. Off course it is far easier with no wind. I start to identify the loops that may have appear and unloop them. Then just by tentionning it should work

There's absolutely no way that anything has become any kind of tangled except putting itself through itself, and you made it 100 times worse taking the lines off :D

If you dropped it in the waves, you might have inverted the kite through the lines and it "looked" tangled, but wasn't and probably could have been sorted by flipping the bar through the lines, once you'd laid out the kite.

If you removed the lines, you'll have to start at the kite and tidy out each "gallery" (A, B, C, Z) from the kite to the mixer/speed system. Probably, by the time you've held A up in the air to have a look at it, you'll see that Z has been flipped through the bridle above the mixer or something like that.

If the lines actually knotted on themselves, then it's just loops that have locked by other loop. Gently tease them apart, and they'll just fall out.

I've seen a guy spend my whole session (two hours) sitting on the beach screwing with the bridles on his Chrono. He shouldn't have detached the lines either :D

PS. the worst thing you've done is flip the bridle through itself, any number of times, or maybe the canopy through the bridle. The good news is, if you resist pulling the bridle apart, you probably won't have to do this again cos it's dead simple to figure out and you'll learn all you need to know for the next time.

Had to eject a Psycho 19 in a squall and it snapped the safety then got picked up and lofted over the trees, road, YMCA camp huts and into a paddy field about 300m downwind...

Took ten minutes to sort it out. Did much the same with the 21 but it got stuck on a tree hallway

Literally takes longer to replace the SPL lines.
