Very nice indeed. Guessing there's a bit of sanding required on the inside mating surfaces, especially the insides of the trailing edge, before joining the two halves?
No I don't sand at all. Carbon dust is not good. What I do instead is scrap the carbon carefully back to part line with a tungsten carbide 50mm wide scraper . Scraping is easier to control. It took about 1hour per halve to get a perfect joint
Hmmm, so like a surform scraper or a blade-type tool?

Paint scraper
No a paint scraper with lots of uses. See on www.linbide.com

Thanks! I'm getting one this afternoon. Workshop's starting to look like a coal mine from all the sanding.

Great work! How did you make the molds?

Standard old school mold
1/Make a plug (dummy wing)
2/Gel coat plug and split center plate. So basically half the wing and yet to be created flanges on split plate .
3/Build up on top of gel coat with chopped mat lamination to thickness of around 6mm.
4/Remove slit plate .
5/Gel coat "new flange" and second half of plug to complete the full female mold.
6/Laminate again on gel coat second side to 6mm.
7/Remove plug and prepare for carbon lamination.

NOT GOOD !! :nono:

I use water and wet/dry sandpaper , (all grits made by 3M, ONLY) , along
with files and scrapers ; NEVER dry sanding on any composite part ,
(unless i got the wet/dry vacuum running) with the exhaust, going out the window ---
and that includes the finish sanding and polishing.

With a Good strategy for the sanding on composites with water ; i hardly ever
need a respirator, but always use rubber gloves to keep the dust out of the
pores in my skin.

GUYS --- this is something you can NOT just blow-off , for Laziness or Machoism ; that
carbon or glass dust , can and will hurt Ya Bad !

I can give you more detail if interested. I am actually making another stab wing at present, making plug now.

Here is the first part of the process for making a mold
plug.jpg
Polished and waxed ready for inserting in split plate
frame .jpg
Construction of split plate 5mm MDF
build split plate .jpg
Cutout for plug.
setting on centerline .jpg
Set plug into split plate.
split plate.jpg
Spray paint and wet sanded.
polished side 1 split plate .jpg
Plug inserted waxed.
tooling gel side1.jpg
Here is the step-by-step process to build your mold. The most critical part is to make the split plate exactly on the centerline of the wing. This is important otherwise you will loose the profile of the front leading edge.

More steps to come
Grant
