Big wings

With all the SUP , surfing and pumping hype, I decided to mix it up and make some different sized wings. Who knows where this may lead, a new sport maybe??

I think it would be fun to bungee or pulley launch onto a foil and pump around until I am gasping for oxygen

There are a few tips to be seen lying around if you're into that sort of thing :rollgrin:

is your hotwire hack a laptop power supply?
what output voltage?
anything else hooked to it besides wire and alligator clips?
what gauge and type of wire?
does it fry itself or work reliably a long time?
seems like a reasonable alternative to the "real man's" 120v hotwire...
rolling with something like a modified 63412?
is root same as tip?
come on what ya got?!

1600cm2 is 250 sq inches ! wow thats huge man ! i think its just gonna be too much drag

on such large wings i think its important to go with high aspect or your wing is too thick causing alot of drag

1600cm2 is pretty much where downwind SUP/Surf foil wings are at now, so you are on the right track.

Sure? I thought the large Go-Foil and Naish wings are 1250ish?

BWD, All great insightful questions. Yes 5amp 12 v power supply with LED dimmer. I use .020 fishing leader most of the time. It fries anytime I am not careful with the temp. I almost have a heart attack each time! This is more finicky than my old 24v transformer, but it is what I had on hand when the other one fried. I should just buy something but I'm a hopeless DIY guy. Is there some awesome problem free hotwire system you can recommend ? I am using an Eppler e212 profile right now, not sure why exactly, visually it seems like a middle of the road cambered profile with the right numbers, 10.5% and max thickness at about 28%. The root and tip are the same. This is a great question since I believe, with massive effort, I have discovered that on the front wing camber is only desirable at the root and not the wingtips. However on the stab camber seems to have stabilizing effect at the wingtips. So why wouldn't I use different profiles for root and tip??? Easy answer is that it is too hard to try everything. I am trying hard to make new wings and molds with the least effort possible until I nail one, then I make it pretty. The size, profile and shape are the first to investigate. I actually don't think this will be a good turning 6- 12mph choice, we'll see. Lately it seems nothing is an improvement. I'm a one man show living at 2000M , 7 month winters, 2 kids and no test team. I love it .

I tried the Naish Malolo behind a boat, at 1060ish , it seems every wing has it's happy speed. I think it is like 15% thickness. How fast is the target speed and which activity is the question. There are some great foils evolving, many days I just want to quit building, and be a consumer. I might need a shop on an island somewhere it doesn't snow so much too. I'm pretty sure I would be a rock star foiler if I was'nt riding and testing crappy or untuned foils all the time instead of just riding. Winter is not helping my beach volleyball either!

Some of the SUP wings are massive and over 1 1/2" thick , so we will see. SUP downwind, Surfing, Pumping flatwater, Kiting... what else?

I'm sure that 1600 is stupid huge for kiting especially if you like to go 30.

Pumping and foil surfing endless perfect glassy uncrowded reform waves might be the new sport to take me into my twilight years....... hhhmmmmm?????

Hi Tahoedirk, seems great minds think alike. Halfway thru this surf foil build, plywood core with fiberglass and carbon skin. It is 1000cm and about 11% thick, but I am starting to worry that it will be too small. Also the plywood core turned out to be quite heavy so thinking I'll try a foam core with carbon skin for the next one. Do you think blue foam core will be strong enough to resist the compressive forces?

that is interesting and something I hypothesized myself, seems like yaw would be more stable in different conditions without camber at tips, and you get sort of get washout for free, and possibly less drag overall.
problem free hotwire system you can recommend ?
i wish...

I am talking about the most recent foils, not production stuff that is about a year old.
