I use inconel wire for cutting foam. Thermally stable and very strong. I was also disappointed with basalt. The weave goes away and just looks brown. Holds a lot of resin too which just adds weight. It does sand well and is easy to work with. When my supply is done I can't see myself using it again. If you can find it there is a fantastic DVD series about vac bagging rc aircraft wings by a guy named Phil Barnes. He spends a bit of time showing how he wraps leading edges to keep the airfoil and minimize post cure sanding. Great stuff.
