Travelling with gear - tips

Some tips to make your traveling with gear cheaper:

- remove your kite bags, or just take one with you
- take heavy parts like fins into your hand luggage
- many airports have different counters for sports bags...on the way from the checkin counter to the sport bag dropoff you can add some weight...check before if it is possible at the airports you checkin, because at some airports workers will bring it to the drop of counter
- use a vacuum bag to fold your kites very small
- if you like, get a split board, and you can put all in a normal bag
- check online if other people are traveling to the same destination, maybe they can help with taking few kg if they e.g. travel with family who doesn't kite
- when weighing your bag at checkin put a foot under your bag to make it lighter...or press to the side with a knee, that also helps
- have it checked thru to the final destination
- using a "golf" bag can save you a lot of money...if not too long (surfboards are too long!)...airlines will accept it as golf bag. e.g. American Airlines charges 40 USD for a golf bag, and 150 USD for a kite bag
- if you are allowed 2 bags, try to get your kite bag as second bag. TAP will not accept it, but worked at Condor (but also depends on the checkin worker...)
- some countries have benefits...e.g. almost all international flights from Brazil allow 2x32 kg.
if the price is the same when booking, you might take two single flights, instead of return flights...if your flight starts in Brazil, you will have 2x32 kg (e.g. Condor: start in Germany: 1x20 kg, start in Brazil: 2x32 kg)
