For the past few days, cold air and a steady stream of Pacific moisture has brought six to 12 inches of snow to many valley locations. As wet as this storm was, the snow plastered spots that normally get blown snow free.
One location, near Livingston, MT, I’ve spied for the past few years and yesterday, October 6th, was my chance. The rancher who owns the land was friendly and agreeable, though he did seem a little skeptical that anyone would want to hike up above his house and fly a kite! The terrain turned out to better than I imagined with lots of ramps, pyramids and steep walls. It was a superb morning of snowkiting.
It’s early for some, I know, but the Montana snowkite season is on!
Today, the Beartooth Highway is reopening for the first time this year (the road had been closed all summer due to rockslides). The isobars tight, the snow is on the ground and I heading up to kite at 10,000 feet atop the Beartooth Plateau. The road should be open for another week to ten days depending upon how much new snow falls. So, if you have the time, get to Red Lodge or Cooke City and enjoy one of North America’s finest snowkite locations. Be prepared though, it’s wild out there!
