A good trainer for storm days, any suggestions ??

Postby snowflick » Sun Nov 28, 2010 2:44 pm

Hi !

I had my first session this year without an instructor with my new access 6m. It was blowing hard !! From 20 to 38 knots !! I did not use skis or snowboard but only my boots because the surface was icy with just a little bit of snow and because of that wind ! Not really recommended for a beginner ! Anyway I had a great time being dragged downwind for 500m on boots !!

I want to buy a 2m trainer kite that I could use on very very high wind days and that my friends could use to start kiting while I use my access.

I tought of the new ozone method, it seems amazing and nice design, but it is too pricy (550$)
The ozone flow 2m is nice but also very pricy (350$)

The hq rush 250 seems nice to start kiting, but I am afraid it wont handle storm like wind well...

There is this Best company kite:

Slingshot:

You have to double the price for the ozone imp... Is it worthed for such kite?

Do you guys have any suggestion for a 2m trainer ? Is there any other trainer that can be hooked to a harness other than the ozone flow ? Is there a way to hook it ourself ?

Thanks !!

Regular kite stores (not kiteboarding stores) sell a rectangular small kite( about a 1.5 square meters) that come with handles, this ones are about 40 to 60 usd and all you need is change the handles to a bar.
Best trainer is large in size.
Slingshot B2 trainer is a good size and prize for high winds.

For a great option to get what you pay for... value...

2m Ozone Flow

Image

(with a Loop, with safet release) Like the the High End Ozones water and snow

Also with wrist safety leash

Napsack:

Colored Lines:
Show up on Snow and 180kg

or
1.5m or 1.5m Imp. (Bar, Bag and Lines)

But the 4m Access is the sweetest with Depower.
I'm on it here in a storm...

This Ozone Access 4m is the best high wind foil with the best range.
Stiffer bridals than any kites (Less tangles) 4 Pulleys mesh cover vents
and patented re-ride safety.... but if budget is too low for the best go for the Ozone Flow then Imp...

Bear in mind that small kite does not always equate to high wind kite. A true high wind kite will be built much tougher than your el cheapo trainer or recreational kite for static flying.

A small fixed bridal for traction or a small sheetable is what you need. Although the kite size you were on for a lot of people would be perfect in thos winds. Remember you were'nt on a board you were standing still. Makes it a lot harder.

Hq has a 3m Apex available and I bet it would be an awesome high wind kite. Minimal lift, small size, depower, the whole package. And relatively inexpensive compared to some others.

Small trainers are probably a waste of money now that small depower kites are available which you can train with and will hold up to pulling you around. I wish I had a 3m apex when I training my 11 and 12 year old boys and the neighbor kid , they get the trainer muscle memory thing in less than an hour and figured out the depower in another hour. I,ve got a 5m and 7m HQ apex ,and a variety of others, you cant go wrong with 3m depower in your quiver.

what about a 4m access?? its as fast as an angry wasp though! most 2m fixed bridles will be even faster.

in 30-40 knots anything can kick your arse and the arses of your unskilled frends. better to put them on a small kite in light winds than get them injured in a howling gale.

I find the lines break very quickly when using trainer kites anything more than just flight training. if you want to use a trainer to pull you around expect to replace the lines quickly. I would have to recommend the ozones and the HQ Rush Pro which both come with beefy lines standard.
