Big Horn Mountains Wyoming

Postby Noahpz » Wed Apr 20, 2011 9:40 pm

A dozen kiters from Montana and Wyoming met up recently for three days of epic snow kiting in Wyoming’s Big Horn Mountains. After a long winter of storms the Big Horn snowpack is deep. Cornices are huge this time of year. As the highway across the Big Horns is still quite closed due to deep snow, we needed our snowmobiles to get to the various kite spots.

Each day an overnight storm brought us fresh powder, even in mid-April. While the day length was long, and temperatures were in the 20’s, it still felt like winter with this fresh snow.

The beauty of hopping on our snowmobiles in the morning was evident. We would rip from one mountain to another in minutes and find the best wind easily. If a storm blew into one mountain we could rapidly transition to another kite spot. In the course of the three days we found three new spots that I had never kited and got to hit up a couple of old favorites as well.

The big surprise was on the final day. We were socked in with heavy clouds and wet snow. It was clearly time to go so we dropped the RV into 4 low and were crawling down the mountain when we came across an overnight rock slide, completely blocking our exit. It took us a couple hours but we finally made a sneak past the edge of the slide and made our way back to Montana.

Thanks for reading, enjoy the photos and see ya out there,

Noah

What a sweet place, thank you for the great photos and stoke. Love the landslide video, that is on the spot reporting, he should work for the weather channel during tornado season.

BUT DUDE.... You guys have a SNOWCAT??!!?? I'm Jealous, that's an F-ing Awesome rig! Definitely a notch up from the normal carpool.

What a fantastic weekend with a possible record of thirteen kites raping Baldy at once.

The fresh snow is still coming down and the winds look good again for the weekend. :D

WYDOT has cleared one lane in the rockslide area and don't expect to have the whole road cleared of snow until Memorial Day.

This is why I still live here. :thumb:
