Jarosa Mesa 1-26-14 Trip Report:
It hasn't snowed around here in a long time and we were all getting delirium tremens from lack of pow. Further, our standard route up to Red Mountain Pass is closed due to a huge rockslide! So a couple of us West-San-Juaners rallied east to meet up with Scott and Tony from Gunny. We will be forever indebted to Scott for supplying the "truck-trailer-snow machine-tow rope" setup! Off to Spring Creek Pass, then west to massive Jarosa Mesa. It's the mirror image of Snow Mesa and a bit lower in elevation so we we're hoping to find some pockets of soft snow. Kites went up before noon up on the ridge near Point 71. George and I have been scheming to pull off a big kite traverse of the San Juans, so we explored part of the route further west. After a few laps of bullet hard windslab and building NW winds, we dropped down to the south side and got into softer and softer snow all day long. We took a perfectly untracked basin and turned it into a mogul field by late afternoon! At the end of the day, George and Scott toured back by kite as far east as possible. Meanwhile Tony and I had a real tough time jumping on the snow machines for the ride out. The winter late day colors and the steady breeze were difficult to leave behind. The scale of this place is unbelievable! Can't wait to come back when it's all freshened up with new powder. The old adage around these parts is that the snow will be back after the Superbowl, so go Broncos I reckon...
