San Juan Recon

Postby NeWORBiT » Sun Oct 20, 2013 11:45 pm

Hiked up to Snow Mesa yesterday, skinned up most of the way, hiked all the way down (due to thin snow, thick rocks). Just enough snow up there on the grassy flats at 12,200' msl elevation. Four to 8" powder on a 2-3 inch base, take your rock skis. Good wind range for the 15m foil. I believe that snow coverage has been good for at least a week, but we'll lose the snow next week if the dry forecast holds true. Wow, mid-October snowkite fun!

Great job getting out on the white stuff Tony! Still getting in some good liquid sessions on the west end, but water temps are getting a bit miserable. Big Mac looked to be in similar shape to your Snow Mesa description.

Sunday might be good again at Snow Mesa, it's snowing there now. Forecast winds look light 10-15 mph, just right, since i ran out of small kites last month, oops. Liking the new (2 me) hq matrixx 15m, first snow ride with it. Kept it real conservative on the last tour since I was alone, half way up to the Baldy Cinco / No Es Cinco saddle it got too rocky to climb any further, got some tiny bits of glide time on the lowest south slope of Baldy. Stayed on the west lobe as there were too many rocks on the low ridges between me and the big south lobe. Did not see the Saguache Sasquatch like i did last spring, what was that thing?
MH thanx for the props!! Looking forward to trying some new sites this winter, big Mac attack for sure. Last 2 times I went to kite on our large local federally managed mudhole (Blue Mesa Reservoir) IT WAS CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!! (tax refund please)!. If I go in that water again this year it will be unintentional, with speed skates on my feet (and ice claws in hand, pfd, etc.).
Whatcha doin' this weekend? nine seven oh- too 7 phive -fo fo ate O.
C U up there. TB

Yesterday I finally got out on snow. First snow kite session of the year. Had a blast tracking up nicely corned powder on Lizard Head solo LW warm Colorado bluebird. Unfortunately forecast is hot and windless for the foreseeable future yikes!

McMillian has a decent base with a few rocks still showing, according to the gravity skiers. CAIC sensors are showing 17". I'd guess that the snow is getting a bit hard now with colder temps and cloudy skies after the last few days of heat. Models are targeting us for a good shot of snow Friday and Saturday. Sunday's potential NW clearing winds could be perfect with some fresh pow. Keep your fingers crossed! Catsup give a shout if you're planning to rally down this way-

Oh man! Already a foot of fresh up high and the storm is still pounding away. I got in a a weak LW afternoon on Lizard Head yesterday before the storm. Pretty much all the kite spots are loaded with a decent base now. Winter is here! Subzero/single digit temps for the next few days so dust off the foils.

Yes, yes excellent early season snow. Best conditions we've had yet on snow mesa last Sunday. Four of us up there enjoying the pow and steady winds.
Dumping at the moment, 16" so far this storm. Blue Mesa reservoir should be ready now.

Big Mac served it up today! Forecast wasn't calling for much except cold temps. I know, we're softies down here in Anasazi country. But the sensors (Thanks CAIC!) promised more...
I got permission from wife to ditch work for an extended lunch break and try to catch up with Parker on the skin track. No luck there, BUT the wind filled in nicely above treeline, right up the slope WSW. Exposed ridges were covered with tortured wind sculptures, but the gullies and basins were filled in with sweet pow. We had 4 Ozone foils in the sky and tracked up a whole mess of blank whiteness. Laps were made in the Putney Pipeline: just like Teahupo'o but closer to home. Winter is here- yes!

A little Christmas Eve action in the San Juans. See if you can spot the kiter. Thanks to Adam Fisher who was in the area and snapped the photo!
