Top Five Reasons why Snowkiting is better than Water Kiting

Postby matthepp » Fri Nov 07, 2014 11:16 pm

Oh man oh man oh man. I can't wait for the snow to fill in enough to get out on the skis and kite!
Soon. In the meantime here's my top 5 reasons why snowkiting is so much better than water kiting, at least around here:

5. 8 knots of wind? No problem.
4. The Z axis
3. Snow/Land KF posts are helpful and actually make sense!
2. Botched kiteloops in deep pow won't put an old guy in the hospital for 6 months
1. Face shots!

Let's hear your top 5...

All relative ;-)
The cold is something I don't like, so this is the main reason that puts me off the snow.
But for people who don't mind it is a great part of the sort as well!

Season starting already?

Kitesurfing
3d constantly moving terrain..... waves.
Wind is cleanest at the beach.
Better in cross on, cross shore winds.
splash down. you can do all sorts of silliness and just splash into the water less injuries.
It the middle of hot summer its refreshing to exersize in the water. Rather than getting hot and sweaty.

land, sand/grass....
more social. kite closer to your buddies. closer to the eye candy.
Better in onshore winds.
Its faster,,,, speed is good.
don't get wet.
Small jumps above land feel extreeeeeme!
jumping, boulders, driftwood, people ect adds an additional level of precision.
can be done in lighter winds.

Lets face it. Its all kiting. Each type is similar and different. They each have advantages and disadvantages.

What I don't get is the amount of people that stick to one style one discipline. I love doing speed runs in my buggy or riding the duens it in. Jumping boulders on the landboard is also so much fun. Dancing with the monster in the waves is epic as is the boosting height off waves. Its all kiting and its all fun.

The only form I don't do is snow kiting. That purely a location/time thing. One day i'll get into the mountains and kite there too.

the best thing about snowkiting is terrain, park benches for sliders, cliffs to go up and down natural half pipes, long downhill runs and the sheer variety of locations, snow kiting off some of the dunes we have can be a magical time. You know how wave riders say every wave is different, it's like that for snow kiting. And you are always really warm snow kiting, much warmer than water kiting in a shorty, unless you are snow kiting naked for some reason.

I still like water kiting better that's not even a question. I always hold back a little snow kiting because unless you are in 6 feet of powder the ground hurts when you crash.

But I love the variety and can't wait until snow kiting season comes around. I also can't wait when I'm snow kiting for water season to come around, it's just nice to change it up.

Thanks to the warm pacific (not an official el nino but something else) we might be riding liquid until February in the midwest so I'm still trying to stay stoked for water season.

I kiteski on frozen lakes mainly... But here are a few:

-no more offshore winds... It's irrelevant, you always come back...kiting or by foot for the last meters
-you can ride for 50-70-100-150 km per day exploring
-skiing is a lot of fun, you can slalom on an endless flat slope
-when your fed up with skiing, you put on the snowboard for different sensations
-spring: granular snow is unbeatable
-carving, carving, carving
-speed:55 mph is quite easy and fun
-social:we all hit the heated shed for a beer
-kickers: all you need is a shovel
-racing: easy to setup (not to organise but setup) the optimal course. People at different levels can race
-powder riding is delightful
-you can jump, roll, unhook, whatever...

But I am hitting the islands twice every winter as I am getting old... Summer is more fun, kite makes winter bearable.

You should try it sometime and you probably will not get cold. I'm usually warm in a light jacket, even too warm and sweating many days. I think it comes from holding an edge for hours at a time and not stopping to ride a lift like when downhill skiing.

Snow Kiting
- Powder Turns
- Awesome Terrain and Features
- Soaring Jumps
- Back Country
- Great tunes (easier to listen while you ride)

Water Kiting
- Waves
- Water is a perfect surface every time (you only rarely have to deal with ice)

In the end I'm a snow boarder at heart, and love making good turns in untouched snow.

Looking forward to a great snow kiting season.

Plummet I have to disagree on the aspect that you find the wind more consistent on the water. I am not sure as to how much kiting you do on the snow but you can't get any more clean wind than on a frozen lake! The winter has our cleanest wind conditions and I have never kited in better. Now the rest is spot on and the cold can be challenging at the best of times....still the freedom that comes with being able to kite in any wind direction and the vast open riding space is amazing. My absolute favourite is blowing past guys riding their sleds and having them chase me down after to tell me how fast and cool that it was.

James
