To my fellow Colorado folk: I stopped at Strawberry Reservoir last week driving to SLC ... kiting meca!! I've kited most of the major spots in CO, but Strawberry knocks them all out of the water... a lake the size of dillon with full snow cover, + all the surrounding hills are barren of trees with 95% coverage. Not the high mountain stuff with thin air, poor snow cover, and strong gusts we're used to... rather good lower elevation thick air. The UT crowd is getting after it... there must have been 200-300miles!! of kiter tracks in the snow. ~4hrs drive from Carbondale.
Cheers - Kevin

My mainstays Twin Lakes and Turqoise Lake are still good.

Twin is usually straight ice, but the warm weather has created about an inch or two of slush on top of the ice, which is great. It has been super nice kiting in a T-shirt shirt with no gloves because the weather is so good!

Turqoise has more snow on the ice and much softer, but the wind is usually not as good as Twin Lakes. You have to hit it on the right day. Twin also has an easier hike in and out, although both are not too bad, as parking is close.

This is a photo from the other day at Taylor Pass (Taylor Peak in background) about 12 miles from Aspen Mountain. It is our local backcountry spot (Thanks to Kevin at Upski!) and likes a south or southwest wind that tends to be a bit gusty and ornery. It's an absolutely stunner venue but requires a 5.5 mile, 3,000ft approach. You really earn it skinning up there but it's totally worth it-this photo doesn't due it justice. Endless big mountain terrain with a ton of wind features to shred. The snow conditions are very good right now. A sled will also get you up there a whole lot faster then hoofing it but I think there is an aesthetic value to the human powered method.

Grand Mesa 6" of fresh a week and half ago have left the Mesa with a sushy cover of corn snow. Very little melting on the very top. Conditions are fast and wet. All we need is wind, tried twice this week, and got skunked both times. But the Cross country is Awesome. :bye: :bye:

Oy! That last picture. I don't think I'd have the mobility with a snowboard and gusty wind to guarantee I didn't end up in that pool :o
