WMFG Pump issue?

Postby Don Monnot » Sun Feb 18, 2018 4:39 pm

Most of my kites are pump-ups. About a month ago I was out in -5 degree F temps and went to use my WMFG Pump, and as soon as I started to straighten out the hose it broke. It was the only pump I had along, but I fortunately had an open cell foil that was marginally big enough to use that day.

I heard about one other guy who had the same problem. Anybody else have issues with that pump hose in super-cold conditions? In warmer temps I've had no problem with it, and love the pump.

I too love my WMFG pump and use mostly pump up kites. I always switch to my lone foil kite when it's below zero F (and only then). Torn too many valves, etc when it's cold.

Old white, or new black, hose?

I had the new black hose break on my pump thankfully it was right at where it comes out of the pump. Just wiggle and screw it back on. The white hose is complete trash toss it and get the updated version. I would gladly pay an extra 10-20 $ to see a true rubber hose like on air hoses etc or the flexilla type hose be put on a pump especially now that they are pushing upwards of 70$ plus, the hose choice is the certainly the weakest link. Everything has been perfected on the pumps except the hose.

All plastic has issues in those kind of temps. You have to be really careful not to bend or bang anything. You can snap off pump feet, handles or crack hoses pretty easily. I have regularly broken snowboarding straps by accidentally stepping on them and bending them backward in cold temps. It's just plain extreme conditions.

I'd say bring an extra hose next time. I bought a similar pump but since it fits the old style pump hoses, I just bring a couple of those along. Does not take any extra space or weight to pack and figured it's the easiest thing to break, specially if people start borrowing it when their pumps fail.

-5 Fahrenheit, that's -20c ! I'd drive home wearing the wetsuit.
