Ok, here's the scenario. Beautiful wife, hates camping, likes the look of the Maldives ( you know, the five star hut on the aqua lagoon style), kite mad husband wants to combine both. Give me some details - anyone for something similar, prevailing winds and best time of year. Thanks!

Best person to contact is Bengan or Scott from Colona in Hurghada. Both Maldives experts. Wind is seasonal. VERY seasonal. I was there for nine days last april and there was no wind. 'round christmas is the best time I think. This time of year you might want to consider the Torres Strait Islands. Five star resorts and 20kn trades.

You really have to be careful when selecting an Island in the Maldives. If you want an Island that has middle to high end accomodation, kiting and the best dive school in the Maldives (in case of no wind, could easily happen), I suggest Kuredu Island resort.
The problem in the Maldives is that you could end up at an Island that you can walk around in two minutes and wind up very bored, also food and rooms and other things should be considered. If there is no wind at least there is a good atmosphere there.
