Race competition, need your advice

Postby Andrei » Tue Aug 26, 2003 5:58 pm

In our country (Latvia) we have too small amount of good freestyle riders, we spend few competition in freestyle discipline but only few riders have necessary level. Many peoples arrive to kitesurfing last year , which can ride but else cant trick.
We thinking to organize big race (~10-20 km) along shore line.
Have anyone any ideas ? or some experience ?

yah, that's me , "can ride but else cant trick"
Would really like to join a race event like that.

I practice on a 4km track and race tourist boats along the coast when onshore winds are 10-15mph.

4km is about all I can take on one tack going as fast as I can. One leg starts to burn, not as much fun.

Think about allowing to change tack every 2-4km to give riders a break and equaly work both legs.

Good luck , wish I could participate.

Yes there is difficulty with long workload on one leg.
but too many riders in two way can be impossible, because race very strained, and start is not "all at one time" but one by one ~30 sec interval.
Have you any idea about overtaking rules ?

Hello Andrei,
in our last event in Bali, we organized an up-wind maraton that was very succefull.
You need side to side on shore wind. Divide the partecipants in heat of 4 - 5 competitor depend from the dimension of the beach.
Put them at 30 meters from each other and do a gate start.
The one down wind start first and then the other one on the command of the race director... The first buoy must be up-wind so that even if you start first your advantage is null becasue you are downwind.

As soon as one heat is gone, the second prepare with kite on the air and follow after 3-4 minutes...
One judge take the time for each heat.
You have competitor racing each other 4-5 guys max is not dangerous and as the buoy is up-wind they need to choose their own way.
Also they racing against the time.

The winner of our maraton took about 35 minutes to complete the course.
We had all 5 heats in the water in matter of 10 minutes.
Is quite spectacular and way better then down wind race....
Hope is clear.
Bye Jankie
