I am not familar with an effective alternative to a kite leash, e.g. grab leashes that are unreliable. I don't like leash wrist cuffs either and much prefer the kind that attach to the harness spreader bar. A good bar with spinable leash that attaches to your spreader bar is put out by kiteproshop at:

go to: http://www.scka.com.....click on safety leash...pics are all there...
This safety allows you to do rotations and untwist back to normal and keep your wrist free of the leash.

I hate wrist leashes too, so very soon after I started kitesurfing I simply replaced the Velcro wrist cuff with a $3.85 brass clip (#27-136800 from
http://www.murrays.com so I could simply clip it to the end of my spreader (where the webbing goes through). Who makes it? YOU do!
Some may say it's hard to get out of the clip in a bizarre emergency where your depower fails, but you can either replace the brass clip with a snap shackle instead (I suppose a cheap side-pivot pin-release would be okay, as long as it's "snapped" to a big enough stainless o-ring), or take your chances considering the odds of such an incident, combined with the fact that you can use one hand to pull in hard on the leash, to reduce the load while releasing the brass clip.
