Tonga kitesurfing!

Postby vide » Fri Apr 11, 2003 4:26 am

Ok - after much diliberation I have decided to head to Tonga for my holiday.

I will be sailing around the Vavau group of islands (looking for secret spots!) and then spending a few nights at this place:
http://www.mounu.com

Looks like a good set-up. Apprently there is not much tidal range, and the wind is usually 15-18 knot trades year round. This particular island is quite exposed to the wind, and has sand beach and shallow sand bottom all the way around, before a drop-off to the deep dark depths.

I emailed the owners and they say they haven't had anyone kitesurf there before. I'll be sure to take lots of photos and report back.

Tonga is a very well known spot for sailing holidays, but not much else... Tonga is the last remaining independant kingdom in the Pacific, and apparently you cannot buy freehold land and tourist development has been discouraged. As a result, there aren't many resorts, and those there are quite cheap. Flights are dirt cheap at the moment - A$547 direct from Sydney to Tongatapu.

I am hoping to discover a new kite mecca - but we will see... If not, I am sure it will be a good spot to relax anyway... I am just praying for good weather as it is the end of the cyclone season.

Isn't Tonga the country that changed its time to 1/2 hr earlier so it entered the millenium first?
Their King seems to be a very interesting (and large) dude, with his own basketball team (all 1.85m and above on his team, the rest on the others).....
Sure looks from the pic like a hell of a spot.
Tell us more.....
Still dreaming of Cook islands!
