kite injury-more info

Postby Guest » Tue Apr 22, 2003 6:44 am

What you say about bringing the kite above your head makes sense, as it will allow someone to get to you quicker than if you are being dragged through the sand at speed, but I disagree with it in general.
OK sure, the best is to have someone competent anchor you when lifting the kite in strong winds, just in case.
BUT, I always launch my kite in strong winds, and then keep it as low as possible. You can put a lot of resistance against it, by sitting on your arse, and making sure your feet are firmly in front of you, digging into the sand like skis, and if a gust comes you will be dragged feet first through the sand. In West wind, this will also mean that you will get dragged parallel to the sea, i.e. you will have lots of room. In Northerly or Southerly winds, try to always launch the kite in the direction of the sea, so that you will be dragged to the water and not the other way.
Sure the kite is often easy to control when it is over your head, but if a gust hits you, you will get lofted, maybe very high, and there is no guarantee that the landing will be soft, and there is also no guarantee that the kite will be in your control after you land. Actually there is no guarantee that you will be able to control your kite when getting hit by a gust, or in over powered conditions having it low to the beach, but I recon it is still safer.
Epecially in West wind, at least on the beaches from, Tel Aviv and North, you will find yourself flying towards, cliffs, fences, roads, cars, or other hard and unplesant obstacles, if the kite is above your head in too strong or gusty West wind.

But most importantly, when you are helping somone out in a difficult situation.. DO NOT GRAB THE BAR!!! That is a recipe for disaster!

Anyawy enough said, I hope we all learn something from these incidents, and manag to stay safe, and have fun...

Hope you feel well, Nati... See you around.

Ciao
Andi

the wind window

I always thought that in the wind window the area of least power was the zenit - was I wrong ?

above or to the side, the pull is exatly the same, as long as the kite is not moving. As soon as the kite starts travelling through the window, then it starts pulling.
The whole idea of keeping the kite above you is fine when conditions are stable, or not too strong, but if it is gusty, above means up when the gust hits, and what gos up must come down, sometimes not as soft as we would like...

1st, I have to say for any beginers out there, or any one who does not feel totaly comfortable in VERY VERY powered situations - DO NOT TAKE UP ANY 12m kite in 30 knots, unless you are prepared to get thrown around, or have a very good anchor, or weigh more than 90 kg. Funny you mention the AB 8.4... (also 2001) I used mine in 29 knots, and I weigh 75kg. Full depower, full trimmer, I could stand on the beach without geting blown downwind, kite above my head, but I aws shitting myself when I launched it, and had 2 people anchor me from the back of my harness.

Nati, I am sorry, but I do not agree with you. Keeping the kite above your head in these OVER powered situations is a lot more dangerous, even for experienced riders. Getting hit by a gust is something that happens very very fast and unexpected, and being lofted into the air, can cause panic, which will result in immediately loosing all control over the kite and serious injury. Rather get dragged though the sand a bit, preferably feet first, if you can avoid the face dive. Also, by having the kite above your head you have MUCH less grip on th ground, to move or even resist to the kite, as it pulls you up. Why when walking with a kite after a downwinder do we all walk with it low to the ground? Cause it is much easier, there is the same force on your body, from the kite pulling, but you have the advantage of gravity, and your full weight on the ground, rather than only half or less, when the kite is above you.

What you describe, is a completely unusual situation. In my opinion the guy who grabbed your bar is a complete nice person, unless he is not a kiter and was trying to help - that might expling it... You cannot compare the force generated by the kite suddenly diving from above your head towards the beach, to the force of a gust hitting.

Anyway, I just want to conclude by saying - going out over powered is dangerous, no matter what you do. One mistake and it could be your last. It sounds very glamorous and cool to be able to hold the kite in such high winds, or to surf, and it is crazy when you jump, but it is very very dangerous, so being as cautious as possible is extremely important. Have a little respect for the wind - she can kick our asses any time.
