X2-18 or X3-18

Postby Mo » Mon May 05, 2003 5:48 am

For those who tried the X3 vs the X2, I need an honest opinion.

I will be changing my X2-18 v. soon and wondering if I should change it with X3-18 or get another X2-18. The only drawback of the X2 is that it's heavy in light wind and do not go easy. Otherwise, it is superb and I trust the kite.

At the same time, I hear that the X3 is not as good as X2 esp. the phenomenon of Jellyfishing. Any advantages over the X2... real adv...

What do you think guys... honest opinion!

Kind regards,
Mo

Hi,
for light winds forget heavy kites.
Sometimes its better if a kite has less seams.
A Mach1 18 starts before the x2 18.
For shure, the x2 and x3 are well made kites.
But I dont believe that the x3 will be starting before the mach1,
because it is also a heavy kite.
Have fun,
Thisl

Hi Mo,

I dont think there is many people out there that have had the possibilty to test the X3 above size 16 since the larger sizes were released a little bit later than the others.

I can only tell you about the 16, in all a much better kite than the X2, more rigid feel in the air, more forgiving and definately lots more low end power. It feels really good in the air, I have only noticed slight jellyfishing in the air but I know that I did not pump it enough, needs to be hard.

The center part of the kite is completely stiff thanks to the new strut connections while the outer parts are flexing. This makes a difference in the way the kite looks in the air. The difference between the center part of the kite and and the outer are bigger than on an X2 and so the difference in flex. This might be seen as jellyfishing but as far as I am concerned this kite outperforms the X2.

Above comments are just my impressions, not a professional statement.

The X3 18 will for sure be better than the X2 with the same advantages.

It will probably not have the same low end as the Aero II 18, which is my favourite big size kite so far.

Cheers,

Bengan

Jellyfishing? Whoever told you that, or whereever you saw it - the X3 was not properly inflated. The X3 when correctly inflated is as stiff as they come. I haven't been on thr 18, but the 16 is far superior to the X2 16. The 16 X2 is an amazing kite.

You guys who used the 16. What wind speed did you get going in. What board size, body weight etc?

I was out yesterday on my brandnew X3 16 in winds some where between 11 and 19 knots. I weigh 74 kg and ride a Spoiler 140.
I use to ride X2 before and really loved the 12 and 16. Well, the X3 12 and 16 both are improved. The low end of the 16 really is increased, and so is the top end. When the wind picked up to about 19 knots I still felt comfy with my 16 while most others switched to 12. The stiff structure of the X3 does handels the gusts much better then the X2 but you have to pump this baby rocksolid for good performance in higher winds.

Take care,

Fer
