JMN322,
I think you are doing awesome if you can ride in 11knots with the Convert 12m and your CF board. Going 10knots and below for any rider, especially larger riders (200lbs) will be a very difficult challenge. Realistically, going with the Crossbow IDS 16m and an even bigger fast rockered board, skimboard, or large fast rockered surf board will be your only way of really acheiving this but your gains will be limited. Big kites in my opinion are luxury kites... dont expect to kite in 6knots, but expect to keep riding in 10knots if used with a dedicated light wind board and good technique.
Slow turning is all part of big kites...they are a park and ride kite, not a kitelooping firefly. The SB3 16m is an alternative light wind weapon... goes upwind like a bandit and has tons of lift. Not sure how it compares to the 16m Xbow IDS, but im sure it will give a run for the money. The other alternative is to lose 50lbs.... and save on buying any new kites. Personally i think the later option sounds like torture... go splurge on a new toy cause it is less painful.

For low winds (10 kts) this is not enough. Looking at XBOW IDS 16 as solution. Am concerned about slow turning. Shy of losing weight (I could, but is not likely), are there other alternatives I should be looking at?

IWB2,

Thanks. I'll look at the SB3 16m as an alternative.

Having to travel 220+ miles to kiteboard, I've been frustrated by low wind days. Wanting to maximize my time on the water (being a newbie), I was hoping to expand my possibilities for riding no matter if it be a low wind day.

My weight ranges from 185-200#. Do you think a 16m to be too big if I'm at 185?

I think its much safer to buy 9 and 13 sq m quiver - 16 is rly big and slow - 13 is big and a bit slow but u can easier move it thru power window than 16 though possibly achieving aprox. same power

JMN, I max out at 185 and have been super happy to have a 16m SB.
The other comments about it being slow moving are absolutely true.
The 16m SB is an upwind machine, and has very good power so it's not neccesary to "move it", you can park it and ride.

It gets going in the 10-11mph range with a good light wind board. You can get jumps and spins in. Yep would be nice to not need it, to have the luxury of saying the wind is too light, I'll wait til tomorrow, but sounds like you don't have that luxury. So for maximum T.O.W. the 16 is great.

Somewhere in the 17mph range I start thinking that I don't want/need to be on the 16m, that it would be more fun to be on something else.

I found the 2007 Contra 14 M kite stalled out in low winds and fell. I used the 14 M Contra 3 2008 and it flew faster and did not stall in the same winds. So, getting a way from bar pressure, I went 14 M SB 2007 II. THis kite seemed to have the same grunt as the Contra II and didn't stall out.
However, I just went 10 M and 13 M Xbow. Got tired of the limited range where I fly in gusts. SB's have a shallow range. Friends 12 M Xbow was stable while my 12 M SB II fluttered a way. So, I found the 10 M IDS to have grunt and turn like my old 10 M SB. I wonder if anyone has tried the light bar pressure settings on the last two settings rather than the factory specified every other setting? This might make the kite bend inward and put stess on the leading edge. Have it set that way, just haven't tried it yet myself.
Landing the IDS system, you need to leave the bar on the ground like Paul Menta's video and walk towards the kite. I did it in the water and ended up with a ball/mess. Suggestions?

Flylow,
not sure if you have figured out how to not get your IDS lines in a tangled state, when trying to land in the water, if not then just remember to treat the IDS self rescue pack down just like if you were on the Contra. An ideal self rescue will ensrue all your lines are on the bar by the time you get to the kite.

Not sure if any one is still reading this thread since it started in July. But if you are still tuned…..

Have the Xbow 2009 10 and 13. Very happy with the ride. Wondering about vibration when
the kite is moved quickly over head. Notice it when carving a turn and bring the kite back over.
Just feel a vibration in the bar for a short time and wonder, what was that since the ride is so
smooth the rest of the time. Don’t remember that feel with the 2007 SBs I had. :D

I believe I´m not off topic but revive the topic.
As newbie in kite I decided for XB 13 ids but not available more in the moment. Second solution is SB12 ids or OR Rice 12 Venturi. Which solution should I lean to according to your "profi or skilled" opinion? Definetly I will buy Mako 150 wide (87 kg) and I would appreciate possibility to ride in lower wind, too. (of course, just one kite purchase assumed for start)
Thanks for advices
